Remember when we mentioned that we were going to Milan to the final event of the Electrolux Design Lab for 2012? Well, we went and met the top 10 designers in person and listened to them present their designs — they were most impressive! Stay tuned for the winner but in the meantime, here’s a more in-depth look at some of our favorite designs. Industrial design graduate Yunuén Hernández who hails from Mexico designed the Mo’Sphere , a molecular cooking appliance meant to aid the average cook in flavor exploration. After watching videos of famous chefs on TV and seeing their passion for cooking, Hernández discovered that molecular cooking was all about mixing ingredients to make food interesting and healthy. Delving into the world of senses and mixing them up with food flavors, she decided she wanted to enter the competition.

Jorge de la Cruz teamed up with Vernaza Gonzenbach to create a modular candle holder called Candelabro, presented earlier this year at SaloneSatellite in Milan. Inspired by the idea of “open design,” the object allows for simple construction, reconstruction and replacing or fixing of pieces by anyone at anywhere. It is made of lacquered Ash wooden rods and copper joints and can hold up to three candles. I’d like to see a DIY of one of these

DesignLibero is a design studio based in Milan whose Fluidity dish rack is such a cool idea. There’s a small planter attached to the rack that uses the water that runs off your dishes as they dry, growing plants or herbs. The fluid base design directs the water runoff into the plant containers, which are with clay pellets and coconut fiber. What do you think of this idea – would you use this? Quarch Atelier is a group of young designers in Milan, Italy that join their unique skill sets together to produce various projects. They designed the C’est Chouette lamp that might be the cutest thing we’ve ever seen. Inspired by fairy tales, the owl sits inside the outer globe as if to sit in a nest. The two-part fixture is made of white china and the owl part conceals the inner bulb when placed inside, helping to soften the light. If you prefer a brighter light, you can always take the adorable owl out and set it on the table next to it.

I’m loving that the backrest can be raised or folded over, depending on your comfort needs. According to Bonaldo, Vita will be available in several modular units, affording several different composition configurations.
