IKEA is launching its 2013 STOCKHOLM Collection in the fall (August, to be exact) and we got a preview during the recent ICFF . The collection focuses on “Smart Craftsmanship” and aims to bring high-end design to the masses at a low price point. IKEA has had three previous STOCKHOLM collections, with the first launching in 1984, and this year they expanded to other areas of the home with mixed-use pieces for many different spaces. Inspired by the 50s and 60s, the timeless offerings took three years to create and you can see why when you discover the details and the higher quality materials that went into each piece

The latest design to launch from Scandinavian design house Muuto is the Pull Lamp , designed by the Stockholm-based studio Whatswhat . Pull was the 2010 winner from Muuto’s annual competition where design students have historically had their winning designs produced by the company. The interactive lamp features a playful detail that allows the user to pull the shade to a lower position as needed. The cord is partially hidden which acts as the mechanism that allows the lamp to be adjusted.

After spending three winter seasons snowboarding in Chamonix, France, and a year in Hanoi, Vietnam working with students, Swedish designer  Jacob Granat started his own company importing and selling furniture, lamps and textiles back in 2006. He quickly realized that selling them wasn’t as much fun as making them himself, so he enrolled in a cabinet-making course, then in university. Studio Dreimann presented its Ike stool during Stockholm Design Week – a simple stool that was inspired by a burst pipe. The foot is made form a steel pip cut into three sections and then bent by a machine. The oak seat screws into the base and can be adjusted. The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Design , had one of the stand-out student stands of the  Stockholm Furniture Fair . Wittily entitled New Bacon, it was styled by a team of six students (Mads Sætter-lassen, Eva Fly, Sanna Movafagh, Emil Krøyer, Mathias Wiik and Celina Hirsch Rolmar) to look like a butcher’s shop with products and information tags hanging from butcher’s hooks in a white-tiled environment. Twelve students had their work featured, including the Archilleus – Changing Habits Chair, by Harald Hermanrud , constructed from one single piece of rope: On a similar theme, Bending Days by Nanna Day Larsen, is made from hand-bent steel that is then welded and powder coated, to create a piece of furniture inspired by textiles and with an expression of lightness, that is nonetheless strong enough to hold the weight of the sitter

Green was a big trend at the Stockholm Furniture Fair ; from the color of products, to a genuine move to bring the outside in. “Grow” was no exception. Under the guidance of teachers Franz James and Asa Nystrom, furniture designer and guest curator Peter Andersson, landscape architect and guest critic Simon Irvine, students from University Gothenburg, Steneby Craft and Design, were challenged to find unexpected and playful ways to bring chlorophyll, oxygen and plants into people’s homes. Jacob Grant’s The Sound of the Forest (above) was inspired by findings that spending time in a leafy forest can reduce stress and mental illness and is a call to “bring trees inside.” Carl Johansson and Elias Malmberg created three stackable units to dry grown and foraged herbs, berries and peel preserving both their taste and their health benefits (above and below)
