Grow at the Stockholm Furniture Fair

Green was a big trend at the Stockholm Furniture Fair ; from the color of products, to a genuine move to bring the outside in. “Grow” was no exception. Under the guidance of teachers Franz James and Asa Nystrom, furniture designer and guest curator Peter Andersson, landscape architect and guest critic Simon Irvine, students from University Gothenburg, Steneby Craft and Design, were challenged to find unexpected and playful ways to bring chlorophyll, oxygen and plants into people’s homes. Jacob Grant’s The Sound of the Forest (above) was inspired by findings that spending time in a leafy forest can reduce stress and mental illness and is a call to “bring trees inside.” Carl Johansson and Elias Malmberg created three stackable units to dry grown and foraged herbs, berries and peel preserving both their taste and their health benefits (above and below)

Rewash Lamp

Portuguese designer Tó Martins is doing something with old washing machine parts you’d never have expected: he’s making lamps out of them . Using old washing machine drums, Martins creates a lamp — called Rewash — whose shade can be customized with just about anything you’d like. So far, he’s made them with fake grass, cork, measuring tapes, steel roses and tons of other materials

Glass Logs by Jeff Benroth Glass

Based in Berkeley, California, Jeff Benroth Glass produces limited edition glass objects, with my favorite being his Glass Logs . The transparent glass logs are cast from a real piece of wood and each comes signed and numbered. Each log is approximately 15″ long x 4″ wide and is part of a limited edition of 50 pieces

Emo Design

The Hug stool by Italian design studio Emo Design will launch this year at Salone del Mobile in Milan. Made of white teak, the playfully-colored rope “handle” is a nice contrast to the monolithic body, no to mention a little help with mobility. Malin Isaksson at the Stockholm Furniture Fair

One of the fantastic things about the Stockholm Furniture Fair was the amount of student and graduate work on show, and one of the fantastic things about the student and graduate work on show was Malin Isaksson. The Swedish-born gilder and framemaker had two pieces in the show, Gilded Butterflies (above) and He Who Laughs Last, Laughs the Longest (below). Both pieces are part of a project called “levande hantverk” (living craft), intended to show how traditional craft techniques can be applied to contemporary design. The mirror was made by applying gold leaf to the reverse of a sheet of glass; a method known as “verre églomisé,” used for centuries by sign makers and mirror makers. The butterflies were made of lace covered with gesso; a white paint mixture consisting of a binder mixed with chalk, and gilded with 22 karat moon gold. The frame itself was made of plaster, clay, and gesso.

Beater by DING3000

DING3000′s newest product is called Beater , a space-saving whisk for Normann Copenhagen . Inspired by a pack of straws, Beater has a ring in the middle that opens and closes the whisk. Plus, if that wasn’t cool enough, it comes in eight colors: white, grey, light blue, nude, lavender, pink, mint and dark blue. I kind of want them all… Share This: Twitter | Facebook | Discover more great design by following Design Milk on Twitter and Facebook

Cl Collection by ARCA

The French design firm ARCA , lead by young designers Erick Demeyer and Steven Leprizé, are launching a small edition furniture line this year. The Cl Collection was inspired by one design element: a bend. Each piece of unique furniture features the signature element as a connector between straight pieces of wood, giving it a puzzle-like feel. Stone panels are then added to certain pieces of the furniture to create the tabletops and shelves.
