Polymorphic Kinetic Bench

Ten architecture students from Columbia University GSAPP have recently completed Polymorphic , a kinetic installation in the form of a bench. Utilizing an innovative design and engineering solution inspired by the kinetic action of a see-saw and the reverberating motion of a slinky, the double-sided bench is made of a series of 119 interconnected sections and an interactive balance board. The sections are connected via an inventive pivot and bolt system, allowing the vertical movement of one section to be picked up by others down the line.

Engine Table

I love when art is functional like this coffee table, whose base is made from an old plane engine. Currently on display at Decoratum Gallery in London, the Cylinder Radial Engine Table is made from a US Army Boeing-Stearman PT-13 engine acquired from the Canadian Museum of Flight, Langley, British Columbia. Constructed between 1936 and 1938, the innovative piece features a simple clear glass top so you can see through to the complex engine workings below. The table can be purchased through Decoratum Gallery

LDF 2011: Okay Studio / Arco

What happens when you take ten designers based in London and you leave them for one week inside an empty factory in the Dutch countryside? This is what… Having successfully carried out a similar project in 2005, Arco invited ten Okay Studio designers (a collective of RCA graduates) to experiment with their state-of-the-art machinery and see what they could come up with – this time based from the factory, and in just a week. They were challenged to make something from wood that was completely different from anything in the current Arco catalog. The resulting prototypes are displayed in “The Garage” just off Brompton Road from September 17-25th for the London Design Festival

LDF 2011: London Design Festival Pop-Ups

Pop-up shops are popping up all over London Design Festival ; here are three of this year’s best pop-up shops: Design and architecture magazine Dezeen have created Dezeen Space and taken up residence at 54 Rivington Street for a month (September 17-October 16) and during the Frieze Art Fair . Dezeen describes the space as “a multi-functional, experimental space, hosting a pop-up gallery, store, video studio and micro-event space.” Together with launching their first book, Dezeen Book of Ideas , will be handing over a 1m x 1m exhibition space to a different designer each day and documenting the work on show using a combination of photography, video and audio. Theo is the online design shop of Thorsten van Elten (Theo is Thorsten’s middle name), which he describes as his “little brother / alter ego.” “& Friends” include Rob Brandt, Daniel Emma, Kathleen Hills, Donna Wilson and Very Good and Proper. Donna Wilson cushions And finally, Today’s Specials , a market stall with the aim of supporting up-and-coming designers proves a retail space with low overheads for their products.

LDF 2011: ibride x Kelly McCallum at Lifestyle Bazaar

Stepping into Shoreditch’s Lifestyle Bazaar is always a treat, but for the London Design Festival , they’ve commissioned something extra special. Kelly McCallum has taken the ibride Junior Bookcase and turned it into a modern day curiosity cabinet. At first playful and innocent, when you peer closer, the darker side of Kelly’s work reveals itself. It’s this constant juxtaposition between sweet and sinister that makes this piece so compelling.

About-Time Clock by Louie Rigano

Louie Rigano made this clock using three circles in the primary colors to represent hour, minute, and second hands. About-Time challenges the way we perceive time and makes gazing at the clock a little more fun (and challenging). via NOTCOT Share This: Twitter | Facebook | Discover more great design by following Design Milk on Twitter and Facebook

Salon by Lee Broom

I’m always excited to see what British designer Lee Broom has going on at the London Design Festival and this year, he doesn’t disappoint yet again. His collection, Salon , is a six-piece series of upholstery that feels glamorous and reminiscent of 1930s and 1940s fashion. The Salon collection includes an armchair, dining chair, sofa, footstool, drum seat and cushions.
