Dutch designer Dik Scheepers has created the Sine Cabinet , a cabinet made of oak, PVC, and brass that comes with a story. Most cabinets (and closets, sideboards, drawers, you name it) start out with items relatively in place and with some semblance of order. Over time, they turn into enormous catchalls for anything and everything and end up being messy storage boxes. Prize possessions, and sometimes secrets, are tucked away behind closed doors and only occasionally do they see the light of day, like on the holidays when family is coming over. The idea behind Sine is much similar to that of these storage places, a cabinet that will change over time.

The icon that we have all come to know and love which graces our Google maps to let us know where we are, or where we need to go, has become ubiquitous. Designer Shuchun Hsiao realized this and created the Google Birdhouse Project , an ongoing project to give birds desinations of their own, just like Google maps does for humans. Based in Valencia, Spain, designer Clara del Portillo is well versed in graphic, industrial, and interior design, and her diverse portfolio reflects that but it’s her simple Opot design that really caught my eye. The design holds a plant on an indoor or outdoor wall, giving new and easy ways to decorate that bare space or fence you have in the backyard. Made from a piece of the incredibly durable DuPont Tyvek film and two eyelets, the design easily hangs when the eyelets are matched up.

Korean design duo THE:Zoom is behind this clever series of furniture called Project ZIP:PER that was inspired by, you guessed it, zippers. They took your everyday zipper that’s normally seen sewn into fabric and incorporated the idea of it into these playful pieces of furniture. The stark white color of each piece let’s the quirky form shine through with the illusion that each design is being zipped (or unzipped) up.

Ed Ward is a designer and developer who has worked for clients such as Established & Sons, Habitat, and Mathmos, and also founded All Lovely Stuff . His office works on product design, including sourcing and product development, interior projects, as well as commissions. Since last year, All Lovely Stuff has been developing a collection of objects that offer a smile along with good function, affordably. One of the absolute highlights of imm cologne was D3 Design Talents , a selection of award-winning products from up-and-coming designers. The tenth D3 contest saw 671 submissions from students and recent graduates from all over the world. Just 21 products from 27 designers were selected. And from those 21, these were my favorites… This folding screen entitled “And A And Be And Not” by Berlin-based designer Camilla Richter is made from different color transparent sections, which change color according to the light and where you’re standing when you look at it. The shapes and colors created by the piece itself and by the shadows and reflections are mesmerising.

IMM Cologne: D3 Design Talents

Gothenburg, Sweden-based design studio, Design Stories , set out to create a collection made of industrial waste material produced by local companies. Working in collaboration with a group of producers and artisans called Returhuset , Merry-Go-Round was born. The pieces are made from materials that would normally be thrown away as trash and the results are a charming collection of lamps and tables with an interesting story to tell

Available in a single or double version, the footrest has a rolled-up blanket attached to cover your feet when you’re ready to get cozy. It doubles as a chair when you need extra seating – just roll up the blanket.
