The Best of Habitare 2012

During Helsinki Design Week , I visited Habitare 2012 , a furniture and design fair that drew about 57,000 people over the five days it was open. There was such great work on display including a large amount of student designs and work by Finnish designers. The Ecobol display from Jouni Leino really caught my eye

Installations at the V&A, London Design Festival 2012

The V&A was bursting at the seams with installations for London Design Festival 2012. Here are three of the best – nendo’s Mimicry Chairs, Bench Years from Established & Sons and Ice Angel by Dominic Harris. nendo’s Mimicry chairs are ghost-like installations throughout the museum that reflect their surroundings. The top image shows a single chair hanging in the main entrance - a reference to the massive Dale Chihuly chandelier hanging in the next space. Elsewhere in the museum chairs “walk” down stairs or follow the lift traveling up and down between floors.

Philippe Starck and Axor Launch New Faucet Collection

I headed to Berlin last week to attend the launch of the Axor Starck Organic bathroom collection, which is a collaboration between design genius Philippe Starck and the German company Hansgrohe’s luxury brand, Axor . The collection combines a sleek, organic faucet form with a revolutionary way of saving water. Philippe Grohe discussing Axor’s history with designers The Axor/Starck collaboration began 20 years ago and each design has become iconic. This latest design was three years in the making and you can easily see why. While Starck focused on the design, Philippe Grohe, head of the Axor brand, was behind the technology to make it work

Rusty Iron Furniture: The Network Collection by Studio9

I would never have thought if you said the words “rusty iron furniture” that I would ever like it. However, there is something appealing about these pieces from Israeli designer Yifat Levin of Studio9 . I don’t know if it’s the rawness of the metal or the possibility of getting dirty by touching it I like best… To keep you from getting dirty, Levin coats the pieces with clear lacquer, but you might not know that from first glance so there is an interesting dialogue that comes into play… The pieces also have plastic spacers on the bottom to prevent scratching. I’m pretty sure you will either love this or hate this… which is it

Ponte Table by Strala

Strala is known for their line of limited edition objects but this year they’re mixing it up with their “cult object” line of unlimited pieces. The Ponte table is the first such design and it’s a good one. The angular wood frame is made of solid oak and stands out under the glass tabletop.

Window Chair and Couch by Mars Designstudio

At this year’s Tent London Mars Designstudio launched the Window Chair and Couch, a project influenced by ancient window forms. The high-back chair and sofa have a woven pattern on the back that resembles a traditional window. The back, therefore, becomes much like a hammock, gently allowing you to rest comfortably and peek through to see what’s happening on the other side. Super Thin Silhouette Lamp by Diogo Frias

Diogo Frias designed this ultra-thin Silhouette lamp that reminds me of Magritte… Frias explains that he was inspired by the shadow of a lamp on a wall and he wanted to create something that would work in smaller homes. He says: Its shape allows with the same lamp to create two different environments, changing the acrylics that assume the role of lampshades, and this is one feature that makes it unique in the universe of lamps. It was developed thinking in smaller homes where the same division has a dual use

Furniture Inspired by Your Socks by Greg Papove

Vancouver-based designer Greg Papove has created a collection of furniture that was inspired by your everyday socks and the stories they have to tell. Socks + Furniture is a coffee table, floor lamp, and sofa that challenge one to take a second look at the mundane and not to overlook the simple things in life. The Five Toes Coffee Table took inspiration from toe socks and supports its tabletop with five legs, one for each of the toes. The socks act as fasteners when assembling and disassembling the table. You can even customize it by using any kind of socks you wish
