Modern Planters Made from Salvaged Metal: Desert Collection by Steel Life
August 27th, 2012 — Design
Modern design has spread through home furnishings over time and over the last few years, planters are finally getting their dues. Landscape designer Shannon Lester started Steel Life and has come out with a line of bold and bright planters as part of The Desert Collection . The pieces are individually made using salvaged and upcycled metal. The Shallow Root Vessel (first image also) eliminates the need for lots of soil and water due to its shallow depth, making it perfect for succulents. I love that you don’t have to use them exclusively as planters – the various-sized Mod Dish designs ( Mezzo Mod Dish above) are a great dish to hold fruit or any of your collections.

Design Store(y): Førest London
August 26th, 2012 — Design
For this month’s installment of Design Store(y) , we hop across the pond, and back a half century, to poke around the flawless mid-century furniture shop, Førest London , which opened this past spring. Owned by Dutch design enthusiast and London College of Fashion graduate, Eva Coppens, the shop showcases Scandinavian and Dutch furniture reupholstered by local craftsmen, vintage lamps, and select pieces of pottery. Coppens recently launched a collaborative collection with eco-friendly print designer Tamasyn Gambell , whose work is stocked by MoMA and Liberty’s of London. Her Bauhaus-meets-modernist prints work perfectly with the vintage aesthetic of Førest London’s Scandinavian finds. An Interesting Way to Store Books: Bookshelf Tower and Divider by Marica Vizzuso
August 26th, 2012 — Design
Young Italian designer Marica Vizzuso has designed B-OK, a space-saving alternative to the usual bookshelf. Vizzuso asks, “Why do you place books in a conventional way when you can have both an amusing and aesthetically interesting alternative?” The shelving system is constructed like a giant tower, yet unfolds into a room divider. Instead of stacking books side-by-side, you pile books on top of one another into a variety of slots. I’m not sure if the books would fall down, but I really like this idea . There’s also something kind of 90s about it – very CD tower-ish that I find a bit nostalgic.

In case of emergency: you might need the Anti Crise Chair . Designed by Pedro Gomes , the Anti Crise Chair concept is “an emotion-driven design designed for an era marked by economic crisis. In an era marked by the economic crisis we are pushed to analyze what is our role as designers in the creation of change and definition of new habits.” Basically, this chair is a giant piggy bank. You deposit your money into a slot on the top of the chair.

Mirrored Geometric Stellar Console Table by Jake Phipps
August 24th, 2012 — Design
Show me anything geometric and mirrored and you know it’s going to catch my eye, which is just what the Stellar Console Table did. Amethyst geodes inspired London-based designer Jake Phipps to create this table full of faceted goodness. Check out the video to really see how the piece sparkles: The table’s 900 angled mirrors give the piece depth and dimension and they run alongside the smooth surfaces making it actually look like the geodes they were inspired by. The matching Stellar Mirror came first – we love the pair together. The piece is limited to 25 editions
