Having grown up with a wood shop in the basement, it’s only natural that Chicago-based designer Jason Lewis would forge a career making furniture by hand. He says, “The activity of building things was always just part of the environment.” After college and a few years of the office grind, Lewis sought out a local woodworker who took on apprentices. Under his tutelage, Lewis learned traditional wood joinery and the craft of building fine furniture. In 2001, he went out on my own, building custom projects for local clients and working on a own line of his own designs. It’s been ten years.

The innovative line stands out from the rest with its modern and artistic take on your standard, everyday pieces like tables and shelves. Founded in 2006, this company also does interior design on top of their wide range of product ideas. You might remember that we featured Zift Design before but take a look at some of their newer pieces we thought were worthy of showing: Renk (first image also) is their newest piece of furniture that was designed specifically for an exhibition.

Paperse is a flower vase from Korean design firm Cauca that’s made from paper. You fold it up yourself and because it’s made from thick paper paired with a vinyl tube for water, you can use it like a real vase. The fun part is that since it’s made from paper, you can write a nice note on the front – maybe to someone special? Leather Italia Black Classic Soho Sofa w/Optional Items

Materials: BESTA, FRAMSTA, NUMERAR Description: I designed this desk to get all my computer equipment and cables up off the floor, behind cabinet doors, and leave my work surface completely clear. A major part of this project was also incorporating the analog meters which show my computer’s status. The desk is built mostly from modified IKEA parts (see the end for a complete parts list). There are wall-mounted cabinets in two depths. The lower center cabinets are cut to allow my monitors to be wall-mounted; the upper row holds my backup hard drives, video game consoles, speaker controller, UPS, printer, and other devices.

Clearly inspired by dominoes that we all grew up with, Kayiwa designed the porcelain DOM-I-NO Candle Holder to hold a simple tea light candle. The minimalist design can be used as a single piece or arranged in a group. Set them up to look like a game of dominoes in the classic black and white, or choose from the range of other colors they have available. The little slit in the middle holds your recently burned match to let it cool off.

Sometimes I just can’t help but develop a mad crush on pieces of furniture, objects, or just brands in general. foureyes furniture is one that falls in that category. Each piece is made by hand in the US (California represent!) by the owner/designer C. Sevin Salomone. When he and his wife moved in together, they realized they couldn’t afford the furniture they liked (I know the feeling!) so they took matters into their own hands and launched foureyes.
