Bits ‘n Pieces

Bits n Pieces

Bits ‘n Pieces is a traveling, interactive exhibit showcasing the dialogue between the analog world and digital technologies within design in a post-digital era.  Including furniture, architecture, jewelry, graphic design, and product design, this exhibit is definitely one not to miss!

Bits n Pieces

The objects included are both aesthetically pleasing and technologically advanced, offering a preview of the future of design.  Work from Lucas Massen, Dries Verbruggen, Jab Habraken, and Melka Teichroew is among some of the most highly anticipated. This traveling exhibit started Nov 4th and will continue until Dec 4th. Find out more here.

Manifold 2

Manifold 2

Manifold 2 is the result of a mathematical game to create a coffee table from a single square sheet of material.  Only cutting and bending are allowed, no additional materials or components.  As its designer (and mathematician) Anthony Leyland points out, while these constraints are challenging, limitless solutions are possible. And it is the solutions that are illustrated here.

Manifold 2

Coffee tables are the first item Leyland has tackled, and many more possible designs are shown on his website.   These tables are made from one meter square sheets of steel with painted finishes. While steel was chosen for reasons of sustainability, it also makes these tables practically indestructible.

Manifold 2

If you’re interested in getting one of these go to Leyland’s website and contact him. I believe they are currently only being made to order for now, though I hope to see them more widely available soon.  The endless ways of making a simple square into captivating tables is truly fascinating to me.  Happy weekend all. See you back here on Monday!

Scaffold Vase

Scaffold Vase

Over 3500 gold plated parts make up this truly unique vase designed to look like scaffolding. Its shape is inspired by 19th century Chinese vases, while its composition from “scaffold” makes it both very urban and very now.  There’s a small glass container that holds water, which is hidden by the rest of the vase’s design, making it not just a conversation piece but a functional vase.  The Scaffold Vase is the work of UK design studio Freshwest.

Handle Stool

Handle Stool

Adding a handle to a stool – genius. In addition to making it easier to move around, it also adds to the appropriately named Handle Stool’s playful look. Available in a variety of bold and bright colors, these stools are completely functional while adding a little fun into your day. The Handle Stool is designed by Fernando Brizio, who is known for his colorful eccentric style. I think it’s pretty hard not to love this stool that combine simple, sensible design meets bright, extreme colors.

Troy Backhouse

Eterna II

I was browsing some of my favorite blogs today, when the work of Troy Backhouse caught my attention. Seemingly gothic and modern in style simultaneously, I decided to take a closer look.

Eterna Primavera

The first table pictured here is called the Eterna II and gets its stunning detail through hand carving.  Its top is made from laser-cut steel. Unlike most tables its top is not flat, forcing you to think about the placement of the objects you place on it. The second is titled Eterna Primavera, and also features the same uneven top. This table’s legs are surprisingly inspired by popular tattoo motifs.  See more from Troy Backhouse here.

Tetris Chair

Tetris Chair

A little bit Tetris and a little bit Rubik’s Cube.  Whichever was the designer’s inspiration, the result is a chair that has one fun design. This would be great for a game room wouldn’t it?  Also looks like a fun lounge chair for watching a movie or catching the game.

This chair comes from industrial designer Gabriel Cañas. Relatively new to design the design world, I think Cañas is one to watch.  He’s already done a few pieces for some pretty big companies so keep your eye on him, and check out more of his innovative work here.

Portable Fireplace by Electrolux

Electrolux Portable Fireplace

Portable fireplaces seem to be becoming really popular. Perhaps it has something to do with snow in Northern NJ in October (ridiculous).  I know I’ve mentioned portable fireplaces before, but today I bring you one that is REALLY portable. Designed by Camillo Vanacore and made by Electrolux, this has to be the most portable of them all. Wouldn’t you love to put this on the coffee table, while you relax on the couch and watch a movie on a cold winter night?

Electrolux Portable Fireplace

There’s more to this fireplace’s design though than its conveniently small size. The Electrolux Fireplace actually starts out as opaque ceramic that slowly turns to translucent and then transparent as the flames flare up. When you are done with it and it begins to cool done, the column turns back to white. I would have no idea this second image was even a fireplace – pretty innovative design I must say.

Would you sit here?

bloomframe

Looking at this first picture alone I’d say yes. Plenty of us have sat on balconies before without giving it much thought, and unless you are really afraid of heights it’s not usually a problem. Take a closer look at the second image now.

Bloomframe

Now, ask yourself again – Would you sit here?  If it’s not completely clear from these images, the Bloomframe is a balcony, but it’s a balcony that is essentially made out of your window.  Your window unfolds into the balcony which you then sit on.  This, I’d really have to think about.  The concept is definitely an innovative one, and it seems to be getting plenty of attention.  I just don’t know if I’d be up for sitting on my window…

The Bloomframe is currently available in the Netherlands.  If you are near Paris, you can experience it for yourself at the Batimat 2009 in Paris from November 2nd until the 7th. Learn more at Bloomfield’s website.

Preview – Dutch Design Week

If you’re headed to Dutch Design Week (lucky!), keep your eyes open for mo man tai.  There’s something about their new work that I find so interesting, which is why I’m sharing it with you today. Sleek stainless steel combines with the delicate look of lace in a collection that includes tables, placemats, luminaries, and more.  This work is a collaboration between mo man tai, Etspirit, and Plauener Sptize and utilizes modern production technology to combine these two seemingly dissimilar elements into a series of captivating works.

These new mo man tai products will be shown at Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven from October 17th until October 25th at the Strijp-S complex. See more from mo man tai here.
