I came across this brightly decorated room last week on Desire to Inspire. I’m loving the bright yellows and pinks and how they are paired with the contrasting brick walls and exposed wood ceiling.
It’s a dreary day and those yellow cabinets make everything better! I can’t imagine ever being in a miserable mood with all of those vibrant colors around. What do you think of this room? Too bright or just right?

Today I’ll be this girl. Except I won’t be painting the walls red, and hopefully I’ll know what I’m doing. I volunteered to help my fiance out and paint the first coat in our ever-evolving basement while he’s at work, and since I’ve never painted before – I’m a little nervous!
To make sure I don’t mess things up for him, I did a little research this morning that I’m going to share, in case you ever find yourself in a similar situation. Although the tips are relatively simple and probably common knowledge for some, they can surely be helpful to the newbie painter. [Such as myself - I had no idea I should paint under the molding first!] So here they are, from Sleekhome.com:
Step-by-Step Instructions to Painting Your Walls
Step 1: If you are painting your ceilings as well as your walls, paint the ceiling first. Allow them to dry for at least 24 hours. If you are only painting the walls, go to Step 2.
Step 2: Using your painter’s tape, cover the edge of the ceiling to prevent splattering and protect the trim.
Step 3: Now cover the baseboards and whatever trim not being painted with tape.
Step 4: Paint a 2-inch strip with a small brush along the top of the wall–where the wall and ceiling join.
Step 5: Immediately paint over the cut-in with your roller to keep the paint from drying and leaving a line on the wall.
Step 6: Apply paint to the wall in square-sized sections. With an up and down and across motion, apply a generous coat of paint to the wall. This style will prevent lines when the paint dries.
Step 7: Once the first coat has dried apply another coat.
Repeat the above steps for all walls that need to be painted.
Have you painted before or will be in the near future??

If there was a “man of the match” for the London Design Festival , I think David Irwin would be it – his name just seemed to pop up everywhere. He had his own stand within 100% Design’s Emerging Designers section and his products also featured on Deadgood’s stand and on the Designers In Residence stand at designjunction . Everywhere I turned – there he was, and with good reason.

The Electrolux Design Lab began in 2003 as an annual competition for all students of industrial design to develop future household appliance ideas. Celebrating their 10th year, Electrolux Design Lab asked the students to design concepts that reflect more of a sensory experience and that they did. Narrowed down from 1,200 entries, these ten top-notch designs were chosen as the finalists. Design Milk heads to Milan later this month for the final event in which one lucky design will win a six-month paid internship with Electrolux! Which one would you choose as the winner?

Kitara is a coffee table from Ukrainian-based designer and digital artist, Max Ptk . Sitting on an A-frame structure, the double layered table combines geometric lines with simple materials, all with a pop of bright yellow thrown in for good measure. Made with only a few parts that assemble easily, the sleek table mixes the natural wood with the painted to form the frame, both of which contrast well with the shiny white glass used for the tabletops. University of Brighton graduate Chloe Meineck was exhibiting her Music Memory Box at Tent London as part of the London Design Festival . She spent two years conducting research into the positive effect familiar music can have for those with dementia – listening to music from certain periods of their lives can help trigger even their most inaccessible memories. She was driven to act on her findings and so created this gorgeous music box. It’s immediately tactile and reminds me of boxes full of little treasures I had as a child. Each object represents a happy memory and plays a certain piece of music when placed in the center of the box. Chloe developed this box especially for a lady called Barbara
