Segment Table is a minimalist design created by San Francisco-based design firm  Box Clever . The conception of their name came from the term “boxing clever,” a reference to how the best boxers win not only with their brawn, but with their wits as well. As designers they take a similar approach: to identify opportunities, learn from and respond to any challenges that arise, and execute flawlessly. Segment Table comes pre-designed with channels built into the surface in order to accommodate wiring and functional accessories. The table’s surface, which is constructed of multiple parts, was inspired by the ever-shifting tectonic plates sitting underneath San Francisco.

One of our favorite growing American companies, Kontextür , is best known for their bathroom accessories such as the Hanging Line , Rubber Ducky Doorstop , and modern shower curtain rings . São Paulo-based artist and designer Jacqueline Terpins dabbles in a slew of mediums for various projects and her latest home accessories line, for design house Riva , employs stainless steel and dark glass. Remember when your desk accessories consisted of sticking your pens and pencils in an old coffee mug (guilty!)? Thank goodness those days are over and designers like Héctor Serrano have come out with great desk-worthy options like Desktructure for Seletti . The modular pieces, made out of fine white porcelain, include pen and pencil cups, open containers, and little boxes that are perfect for office supplies and other trinkets you need on the fly. You can use the pieces separately or push them together to become an industrial warehouse (gray), a ship (blue), or a city (red), each containing a band of color at the bottom. I recently walked the aisles of the New York International Gift Fair where many of the largest names in home, accessories, and lifestyle set up shop to display their latest lines. The six-day event houses companies touting every kind of aesthetic, and swallows all 675,000 square feet of the New York City Javits Center. To see all that is featured would consume all six days, but luckily for us, the “Accent on Design” aisles did a fine job of highlighting both known and unknown names who were releasing interesting and modern designs in Spring 2011. Here are a few that caught my eye — take note.
