As part of the DMY 2011 Asia Exhibition tour , which presented innovative German design objects and products at seven different fairs and festivals in Asia, Sascha Grewe exhibited his A-Z stools / tables with storage. The A-Z stools are made of MDF and are available in — get this — 250 colors! The stools can be used as seats, side tables, shelves or simply as typographical objects. I don’t think I’m ready to see this alphabet furniture trend go just yet.

SleepBox is a contemporary and organic piece of furniture made from HI-MACS® material. Resembling a giant chaise lounge, the seat has an interior cutout with a leather cushion, which would make a great place to curl up and read a book or watch a movie. The project was designed by Caspar Lohner at the Chair for Computer Aided Architectural Design CAAD, Department of Architecture, ETH Zurich, supervised by Mathias Bernhard and Manuel Kretzer and produced in collaboration with Kläusler Acrylstein AG, the exclusive distributor for HI-MACS® in Switzerland. Based in Mexico, Masiosare Studio is composed of three young industrial designers that aim for functional and accessible design. Flaca , which is Spanish for skinny, is a lamp they designed that meets both of those goals.

Dutch designer Dennis Parren created the CMYK Lamp for his graduation show from Design Academy Eindhoven. The innovative design uses LED technology to project cyan, magenta, and yellow onto the ceiling and walls. The lamp is shaped like a graphic outline and casts 3D shadows which he discovered only by accident. The experimental lamp sets out to display the mystery of  light and what it can be. Currently on display in the Transversality Exhibition at Galerie BSL in Paris through February 11, 2012.

2011 Year in Review: Best of Home Furnishings

The results of the five-day design workshop called Nowa Forma , or “New Form,” that took place in Swarzedz, Poland earlier this fall proves that with talent and teamwork great things can happen. Over the course of five days, four teams comprised 16 designers, plus participants from four companies designed and manufactured four distinct pieces of furniture. The Kanapka (above) is a sofa with an inside-out interior that includes three upholstery covers so it can be re-outfitted on whim.
