Design Store(y): Still House

Design Store(y)  heads to the East Village this holiday season to tour  Still House , owned by Pratt graduate Urte Tylaite. The 300-square-foot sliver of a space was designed by Brooklyn-based firm Silva/Bradshaw, and features wood plank floors, a dropped wood plank ceiling, narrow wood plank shelving along the walls, and plywood display cases down the middle. Tylaite featurees items from local designers, plus pieces from Scandinavia and Japan. Still House opened its doors a bit over 18 months ago; we’ve been dying to get inside. Skim Milk: Picnic Sofa by Industrial Facility

Picnic Sofa  is a minimal design created by England-based designers  Industrial Facility . The project was designed for Herman Miller , and will be available in a two or three-seat variation. The sofa is an addition to Herman Miller’s Collection series of furniture that was first introduced by George Nelson of the 1950s. The sofa is distinguished by its wire-frame structure, which carefully holds the contoured cushions into place. The wire-frame base has been a tradition in Herman Miller pieces due to its versatility and lightness

Norwegian Designers Strek Collective’s Versatile Trestles, Lamps and Containers

Strek Collective is a group of four Norwegian designers who will be presenting a group of products as part of 100% Norway 2012 at Tent London . The team collaborates to create simple, yet versatile, well-made designs. The collection, which includes trestles, lamps, and storage pieces, work separately just as well as they do together. The trestles, named Wandering Lines , were designed based on their own need for tables and benches while exhibiting. Available in three sizes – for benches, tables, and clothing stands – the trestles are flat-packed and easily assemble or disassemble when needed

NY Design Week 2012: WantedDesign

In its 2nd year, WantedDesign was back with a multitude of designers, architects, manufacturers, students, and more for an exhibition that ran during the unofficial New York Design Week . The event is meant to bring about new relationships and to spread ideas. The Tunnel was buzzing with creative energy and brilliant design and it’s definitely an event not to be missed. Designer Todd Bracher partnered with 3M Architectural Markets to create Lightfalls , a lighting installation that utilizes the laws of physics to bounce light repeatedly from a single source

METAL WORKSHOP: Cranbrook for Alessi

Legendary Italian design company Alessi partnered with the equally notorious Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2009 for a collaborative workshop through 3D design and metals called  Cranbrook for Alessi . The group of Cranbrook designers included: Adam Shirley, Seth Papac, Katie MacDonald, David Schafer, Jonathan Muecke, Patrick Gavin, John Truex, Richard Nelipovich and Suzanne Beautyman, all lead by Cranbrook 3D Designer-in-Residence, Scott Klinker, and Metalsmithing Artist-in-Residence, Iris Eichenberg. The goal was to “search for new forms in metal through a hands-on, craft process in the metal shop.” The results were presented at an exhibition entitled METAL WORKSHOP: Cranbrook for Alessi coinciding with the re-launch of the flagship Alessi store in Soho, along with ICFF and New York Design Week . Four of the designs created during the workshop are currently in production for Alessi and are aiming for a 2012 launch date.

SaloneSatellite at Milan Design Week

SaloneSatellite turned 15 this year, and in honor of the late great Steve Jobs, its theme was technology. Salone was the first design event on this scale to dedicate a section to young designers, although in this case, the criteria for “young” is under 35, so they are a little more established than the student designers seen at the likes of Greenhouse at the Stockholm Furniture Fair. I loved Gorgiera Pack by Macarena Pollock. Made of Yupo paper, this fruit packaging turns into a display stand with a simple twist. Equally ingenious is this light from Design Facility , which projects a focused A4 beam, casting into darkness anything that might distract you from the task at hand. Part of the Experience and Product Design Diploma at the Singapore Polytechnic Design School , Design Facility was created as a research facility where students can learn through live design projects.

C’est Chouette Lamp by Quarch Atelier

Quarch Atelier is a group of young designers in Milan, Italy that join their unique skill sets together to produce various projects. They designed the C’est Chouette lamp that might be the cutest thing we’ve ever seen. Inspired by fairy tales, the owl sits inside the outer globe as if to sit in a nest. The two-part fixture is made of white china and the owl part conceals the inner bulb when placed inside, helping to soften the light. If you prefer a brighter light, you can always take the adorable owl out and set it on the table next to it.

April Tables by Alfredo Häberli for Nikari

Finnish wooden furniture and furnishings company Nikari began a year long project entitled 2012 Designs for Nature in which they asked 12 designers or studios to design a wood product that best represents Nikari’s philosophy on wood design. The decades old company designs top notch quality pieces from sustainable wood practices and each of the participants had to study their practices to create their own design. For the month of April , Swiss designer Alfredo Häberli created a family of three tables (in oak, ash, & birch) that feature large bases with thin, suspended tabletops. The delicate tops appear to float on the massive bases almost like rocks balancing on top of each other.
