Kartell 4801 Chair, Reissued

Kartell is bringing back its 4801 chair designed by Joe Colombo, first manufactured in 1965. The curvy, low-slung piece is the only chair the company ever produced in wood. To mark its 60th anniversary, Kartell is re-issuing it, this time in plastic, just as Columbo originally specified it.

A-Z by Sascha Grewe

As part of the DMY 2011 Asia Exhibition tour , which presented innovative German design objects and products at seven different fairs and festivals in Asia, Sascha Grewe exhibited his A-Z stools / tables with storage. The A-Z stools are made of MDF and are available in — get this — 250 colors! The stools can be used as seats, side tables, shelves or simply as typographical objects. I don’t think I’m ready to see this alphabet furniture trend go just yet.

Mind-Bending Nendo Exhibition in Taiwan

Nendo has a solo exhibition going on through the end of August at the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute that features two collections: Thin Black Lines and Dancing Squares. Thin Black Lines s a collection of furniture formed from “Still Black,” whose installation looks Dancing Squares is a collection based on the concept of “Active White,” which has been installed onto a room-sized sketch affixed to walls and floor with a fish-eye lens-like effect as though viewers are seeing it through a tiny water drop. New Work from Joost van Bleiswijk and Kiki van Eijk

Joost van Bleiswijk and Kiki van Eijk present new work at VIVID Gallery in Rotterdam now through January 5, 2011. The works of Joost van Bleiswijk and Kiki van Eik in this exhibition reinforce each other in a positive way through juxtaposition — the tough strength of Joost’s heavy steel plates against the fragility of Kiki’s airy and less systematic structures give an additional tension to both artifacts. For this exhibition Van Bleiswijk worked only with thick steel plates and a blowtorch to create the “no screw no glue rough” edition. He made sculptures that could be art pieces but also used as tables or cupboards.

New from Luxx Box

Luxx Box has launched a few new products at the Quench Exhibition at PLSMS gallery during Design Tide Tokyo . Descriptions below from Luxx Box. NeoRoc Debonair meets punk… Like a street kid who spends all their time in a library, NeoRoc has a loud mouth and the smarts to back it up. NeoRoc is an unexpected mash of rococo style refinement and rebel color unleashed to unite the middle classes.

Hanging Around at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

Sunday, I took some time to check out the Hanging Around exhibit of permanent collection of modern and contemporary lighting at the Philadelphia Museum of Art . Here are a few of my favorites from the exhibition: First, I love the Lüster Chandelier, a tongue-in-cheek 2D LED chandelier by German Ingo Maurer. Also by Ingo Maurer is this 2003 lamp called “Wo bist du, Edison?” (“Where Are You, Edison?”).
