Fragments Table by Uto Balmora

I am not a huge fan of glass dining tables, but this faceted glass table by Uto Balmora for Tonelli Design won me over. If you’ll recall, we saw similar Tonelli glass tables in person at High Point Market in the Leif Petersen showroom . NY Design Week 2012: Model Citizens NYC

…and so begins our 2012 New York Design Week coverage! First up is Model Citizens NYC , a show I also attended last year . Now in its fourth year, the show had a few gems situated in an awkwardly large space… I preferred last year’s space, but this year there was a lot more to see. Hated having to take an elevator up to the hot 4th floor, but was happy to be greeted by this. The Tambour Table by Michael Bambino that we featured this morning ! David Hsu’s Desk 117 Chair from the University of Pennsylvania Architecture department Goodjoy hooking toothbrushes Loved this smoke pillow by Studio DKS Shapeways had some cute stuff, including these teeny tiny chairs. I wish I’d stuck my finger in the photo for scale

Neo The Magnetic Hammer by Jung Soo Park

And now for another edition of “Why didn’t I think of that?” starring Jung Soo Park’s magnetic hammer named Neo . One of the most frustrating things when you head up a ladder is having nowhere to put your nails. Jung Soo Park has tried to solve that problem by creating a hammer with a magnetic bottom so that the nails attach to it, freeing up your extra hand to stay safe on the ladder and keep dirty nails out of your mouth. Smart! Watch the video here .

Fluidity Dish Rack Planter by DesignLibero

DesignLibero is a design studio based in Milan whose Fluidity dish rack is such a cool idea. There’s a small planter attached to the rack that uses the water that runs off your dishes as they dry, growing plants or herbs. The fluid base design directs the water runoff into the plant containers, which are with clay pellets and coconut fiber. What do you think of this idea – would you use this? Puffy Furniture

earthnform Porcelain

Los Angeles-based earthnform designs a line of porcelain that is both sculptural and architectural. What’s unique about them is that they design the pieces from package material. If you think about how much plastic is produced and where it goes after you’ve opened whatever it is that you bought, it’s quite overwhelming. Well, earthnform wants to bring the issue to the surface while at the same time “producing functional pieces cast from found plastic.” By reusing the packaging material, they in turn, create art. “Gehry” ceramic bowl In honor of architect Frank Gehry. This design came from a plug in air freshener package found in a convenience store in Burbank, California.

Retrofitting a PAX into a closet

Materials: PAX wardrobe , LYNGDAL doors, wood trim, mitre saw, table saw, chop saw, nails, screws Description: After looking at PAX wardrobes and also at several nice hacks here , we decided to remove our 1950s built in closet and replace it with a set of PAX wardrobes. Our closet measured 58″ across, so two 29 1/2″ wardrobe pieces would be close. We decided to maximize the closet so we chose the taller wardrobes. To make these fit, we had to enlarge the opening of the original closet by cutting up several inches, and also taking the plaster off the left side of the closet.

After Image by Monocomplex

Monocomplex’s new lamp, After Image , was inspired from the scene of mouse fire play (‘Jui-bool-no-ri’ in Korean language), which is one of Korea’s traditional customs. After Image expresses the fast “afterimage” of fire moving quickly, recreating the natural curve using wires and steel pipes, which were combined irregularly and connected along the natural flow of the fire. The curves reflect the light’s continuity and durability.
