San Francisco-based Soft Cities creates blankets and napkins, or Mapkins as they call them, which feature a map with a location of your choice. The company then prints your map with special markers that you’ve chosen (like “I was here” or “Mom’s house”) and prints them locally on a soft fleece for the blankets or 100% Kona cotton for the napkins. They are completely customizable and the options are endless

Gore Design Co. calls themselves “purveyors of fine concrete” but I call them artists. It takes a lot of skill to make a sink that leaves a long-lasting impression. But Gore hasn’t made just one sink that leaves me speechless — check out my favorites below and then visit their website for more creative designs (including fireplaces, countertops and furniture).

Lapo Germasi is a 24-year-old student from Italy studying industrial design. This chair is one you’ll either love or hate. It consists of a cube of electro-welded PVC, balls of low-density polyurethane and a suction valve. “An empty solid but full of air, elements inserted into it but who fill it only partially

Les frères Plo , designed by Gaspard Graulich , is a collection of furniture that functions as either side tables or display cabinets. With four variations that differ in shape and color, they are made of dark wood boards held together via an interlocking system that provides a pop of color and makes each piece stand out. This isn’t just any star’s home, it’s Darren Star’s home. Don’t recognize the name? He’s the creator behind favorite shows such as 90212, Melrose Place, Sex and the City, and the recent GCB.
Architectural Digest featured his recently renovated Bel Air home in their March 2012 issue. Personally, I’m drooling over the grey lacquered bar room and the giant disco ball painting.
How about you?

I fell hard for the Potential For Collapse collection created by Axel Yberg of Akke Functional Art . Each one-of-a-kind piece looks to be delicately put together and ready to topple at any moment, but is in fact, very sturdy and carefully constructed. Walking a fine line between art and design, these pieces are made to “represent the delicate nature of the human psyche and the inherent risks involved in taking chances — as well as the great rewards that come from successfully pursuing one’s dreams.” Amen to that! Some of these pieces are available – please check Akke Functional Art’s website for details.
