Curated by Volker Albus, Design Museum Holon in Israel has a new exhibition that just opened on May 26th called new olds: design between tradition and innovation . Pictured above is the Happy Material chair by Pini Leibovich, which is made from thousands of balloons with its nod to surrealism and furniture-as-art. new olds presents works by over 60 Israeli and international designers exploring design between tradition and innovation. They are inspired by historical references and symbols ranging from the deer antlers to the cuckoo clock, traditional porcelain, Baroque objects and the more recent history of Bauhaus and Memphis.

I really loved the work of O&G Studio , who I discovered at ICFF . They’ve updated classic silhouettes by adding fun colors and rubbed finishes, including a silver finish. Made of solid American hardwoods and pine, each heirloom-quality chair is handcrafted

New York-based designer Jonas Damon takes a hybrid approach to his work. By day, he’s Creative Director at frog , where he and his team help the world’s leading companies, such as GE, Intel, Comcast, and TouchTunes bring innovative products and experiences to market. In his spare time, he collaborates with small manufacturers such as Areaware and Roll & Hill on highly personal and experimental objects. Take, for instance, his witty analog iPhone, iPod, and iPad docks , which not only reference but also elegantly romanticize old-school alarm clocks and the bulky TV sets of decades past

The WAFFT series by Tani-Matsumura (Takaaki Tani and Kazunori Matsumura) consists of a table and a stool. The theme of the furniture is “waft.” Made of plywood that is a hybrid between aluminum and beech wood, the flexible thin material that is strong enough to support the weight. The airy twisting of the legs also makes it look like “a leaf dancing in the air.” Photos by Kenta Hasegawa. I stopped dead in my tracks in front of the Nurseryworks booth at ICFF when I spotted this crib called Hollis . I had seen it online before but to see it in person was one of those moments where your heart stops for a split second.

The Construction Chair and Composition Chair are two ornate metal modern chairs, both designed using unique techniques.
Shown above is the Construction Chair, a chair made completely of copper. 481 .5 mm thick copper square pillars were first stacked very precisely before being soldered in place.

The Composition Chair is handmade by designer Kouichi Okamoto of Kyouei Design. The chair took over six months to complete due to an intricate process in which no bolts or welding is used. The only tools used are a jig and pliers to bend thin aluminum wire into the awesome Construction Chair.

Both the Composition Chair and the Construction Chair are from Kyouei Design, of which Kouichi Okamoto is the CEO.
Kyouei Design is a Japanese product and lighting design and maunfacturing company that was founded in 2006.
