Italian firm Novae Architecture churns out a variety of design including both architecture and furniture, with their latest being the FOLDONE Table. The table appears to be a series of folds from one continuous piece of steel, which creates functional areas capable of storing your things. The open, faceted piece not only looks good, but the void creates an overall lightness to the design. Leave it empty or fill it with books or other items you want close by. Sarah Pease is a student designer, maker, and researcher. Through her work in all mediums, Pease strives to create products that challenge notions of value and function. Her appreciation for straightforward thinking and efficient construction manifests in minimal aesthetics and intuitive interfaces. A Rhode Island native, Pease is currently completing her senior year in the Department of Furniture Design at RISD. Another Ceramic Candlestick designed by Marie Dessuant for the British furniture brand Another Country was launched during the London Design Festival . Each candlestick, which is made of a ceramic lid on a turned oak base, sits atop a box that can be used for storage or keeping belongings safe. I love that they resemble pots and pans, but also are reminiscent of old-timey candleholders. Based on a childhood love of model glider planes, Daniel Hulsbergen created the Vederlicht (Featherlight) out of the same materials as the planes and using the same technique. Not being able to afford the costly hobby as a kid fueled his fascination with it to this day, so turning it into lighting only seemed natural. Just like the glider’s wings, the light is constructed out of Balsawood and Oracover (a heat shrink film), making it extremely lightweight.

One of the people who I’ve posted about the longest is probably Joe from jefdesigns – I’ve long been a fan of his nature-inspired products. His new fabric lamps seem like a logical next step. After years of making lamps and separately making textiles and patterns, he’s married these two in a series of new drum pendant lights.

I was thrilled when I heard that urbancase had released a new piece of furniture. The Alvo stool was designed by Brian Beck and he also hand-makes every single stool himself using vintage German block planes and a simple bench lathe; no computers necessary – just good, old fashioned muscle. It’s always a treat to have a day when you can sleep in late or spend a little extra time in bed. Now that Hurricane Sandy is about to hit the East Coast, and in NJ/NY almost everything is closed and/or cancelled, it’s a bit strange to be forced to stay home all day – when there’s not much else to do but lay in bed all day! But hey, as long as we stay safe – I’m not complaining!
I can’t take my eyes off of the Weather Channel and we’re all set up with flashlights, candles, sump pumps and a generator. We’ve got more food and water than we can probably eat. Yesterday, at the grocery store, there wasn’t any bread, batteries or milk left. It was so eerie to see all of the empty shelves. Many people say it is the media hype that makes people crazy, but when you think about the worst case scenario with flooding and being out of power for a week or more, it is a bit daunting. I guess we’ll see what happens – how right the media is about this storm.
What about you guys – are any of you in the path of Hurricane Sandy? Are you hunkering down with cozy covers and comfort food? If you are, I hope you stay safe as the storm worsens.

The Barrel Lamp by Nieuwe Heren has a new little brother, the Baby Barrel Lamp, also designed for Dutch design label called New Duivendrecht . The original Barrel Lamp was inspired by the aesthetics of WWI searchlights, and so this is a simpler, scaled-down version of the larger floodlight .
