Robust changing table

Materials: BEKVAM kitchen trolley, wood boards Description: We needed a small changing table for our newborn. Since both of us are students with limited income, we decided IKEA was the place to find a suitable changing table. The only one small enough to fit in our bathroom was SNIGLAR, but I thought it looked weak and rickety.

Varde counter drawer hacked by kitchen sink

Materials: varde counter, boholmen kitchen sink, atlant strainer, edsvik kitchen faucet Description: When we were designing our first kitchen, I wanted to avoid chipboard as much as possible and have something sturdy. That’s why we decided to chose Varde kitchen. On the other hand our kitchen room wasn’t too big, so we had to save the place. That’s why we replaced one drawer in Varde counter with kitchen sink.

Lazy Linda Kitchen Organizer

Dutch design company Royal VKB has recently launched the Lazy Linda Kitchen Organizer. It was created by British designer Simon Wilkinson to hold all of the kitchen utensils we use on a daily basis. The container features two levels, the tall one to store long-handled items like spatulas and spoons and a low level that is perfect for smaller items like toothpicks, thermometers and spices. It has a ball-bearing system that allows the unit to spin for easy access. The Lazy Linda is available in white and grey and can be purchased at GSelect .

Custom bar from IKEA kitchen cabinets

Materials: PERFEKT ABSTRAKT cabinets, plywood, glue, IKEA hardware Description: We have an a walk through space from our dining room to our family room that we use as a bar. Stuva Pantry

Materials: Stuva Combination Description: I used Ikea’s children’s furniture for my kitchen pantry. Perhaps not a “hack” but it’s a combination that I haven’t seen anywhere else and it is working very well for me.

Bornholm Kitchen

My lovely friend Susan Serra (remember her great article on 2011 kitchen trends ?) is launching her new line of Scandinavian-inspired kitchen furniture called Bornholm Kitchen this week at the Architectural Digest Home Design Show . Along with her daughter, Kelly Serra Donovan, Susan has created a new kitchen furnishings line inspired by the spirit of their ancestral birthplace; authentically Scandinavian, yet handcrafted in the US. Bornholm is a kitchen that promotes social interaction — it’s freestanding design is perfect for today’s open floorplans. It’s the “little black dress” where the accessories make it your own.

Ten Characteristics of a Modern Kitchen Found in House Beautiful’s 2010 Kitchen of The Year

This year’s House Beautiful Kitchen of the Year was designed by Jeff Lewis of Bravo’s Flipping Out. To reflect his personal aesthetic, Jeff Lewis says he took a “California modern” approach to designing this year’s kitchen.

To play off of his observation, we’ve put together a list of ten characteristics of a modern kitchen as they are found in House Beautiful’s 2010 Kitchen of the Year.

koty2

  1. Dark Wood – The cabinets are a rich brown that stretch throughout the kitchen.
  2. Metal – Hints of metal are scattered from the island stools to the stainless steel appliances to the counter accessories.
  3. Openness – Jeff Lewis said overbuilt cabinets create claustrophobia, so he chose door-less shelves to create an open feel.
  4. Wood + White – Clean white countertops break up the dark wood cabinetry and the light wood flooring.
  5. Functionality – The open wine storage wall lets in tons of natural light while doubling as a place to store wine and other bottled beverages.
  6. koty1

  7. Natural Light – Already mentioned in number 5, the wall-storage wall, in addition to the light colors, allow for plenty of natural light.
  8. Pops of Color – Red panels on the far wall add an element of surprise.
  9. Eco-friendly – The kitchen table is made from reclaimed wood taken from an old polo barn.
  10. Minimalistic Pieces – The polished metal island stools, the chairs at the kitchen table, the interesting light fixture are all simple and stylish pieces.
  11. Storage – There is a ton of storage space in this kitchen with cabinets on both sides of the countertops that eliminate visible clutter.

What are some other modern characteristics you see in the 2010 Kitchen of the Year?

Vanity using IKEA Fastbo panels,Stainless IKEA kitchen Cabinet doors and Butcher Block Countertops

Materials: Fastbo Panels, Ikea Stainless Doors, Numerar Countertop

Description: We repurposed an existing vanity (builders beige) by removing the doors, then affixing the Fastbo panels to suit the Ikea standard kitchen cabinet stainless doors (not alot of work) – (sorry don’t have the Ikea name of the stainless doors- they have a copper now but I havent seen the stainless in doors in a while.)

We then used Ikea butchers block NUMERAR countertop, stained it in ebony minwax stain and varnished with 5 coats polyurethane in high gloss.

Then added square sinks from Rona and faucets as well.
