Aki by Studio Dreimann for ITRE

German design firm Studio Dreimann recently designed the Aki pendant lamp for the Italian lighting manufacturer ITRE. Aki was designed for use in offices but I think it would work over a dining table as well. The fixture was inspired by canopies of leaves and the way light floods through them. The open structure is made of CNC milled wood that has six built-in LED strips that provide ample light.

Al-Hamad Design

We spotted the work of Al-Hamad Design at ICFF this year and really loved the unique approach they have with their designs. They definitely think outside the box with innovative (and sometimes quirky) twists on furniture design making each of their pieces memorable. Here are some of our favorites: Little Oyster is a side table that converts to a chair by lifting the tabletop up.

Nendo for Lasvit

Nendo paired with the Czech glassmakers, Lasvit , to create a collection of hand-blown glass lighting and objects. This is Nendo’s first foray into the glass world and the pieces are quite beautiful. Each piece is unique with slight variations, as that’s the unpredictability of them being hand-blown. The forms are striking, yet elegant all while remaining simple in their overall shape

BBQ Lamp by La Firme

Montreal-based design company La Firme sees the beauty in an ordinary BBQ propane tank . Why should it be hidden away? They decided to create a lamp out of it as a reminder about the evolution of lighting and of our relationship with fuels. Photos by Marie-Élaine Benoit and Jonathan Nicol

Yo-Yo Lamps by Almerich

Spanish lighting company Almerich puts the fun in functional with their Yo-Yo lamps that resemble (you guessed it) a child’s yo-yo. Available as a floor or hanging lamp, the red fabric-covered cable is close to 33 feet and rolls up between the two diffusers just like the string of a yo-yo. LIGHT_NESS by UXUS

LIGHT_NESS is a lighting concept by Amsterdam-based company UXUS that is an interactive project that puts the end user in control of the design. The lamps are made of a frame, neon orange tape and a cord. The final product is created by wrapping the tape around the frame to create the lampshade. UXUS developed the concept where user and designer roles become interchangeable; the consumer dictates what the product should look like and the designer is limited to simply providing the material
