Stretch is more than a cool chair design, it’s artist Jessica Carnevale’s attempt to bring the exuberance of the fashion world into her designs. Using a simple shape, Jessica experimented with a number of different materials before choosing latex, bungee, and rope, enabling her to use bright colors and enjoy wondrous elasticity. Fun and fabulous, I think Jessica definitely realized her goal of incorporating fashion into furniture.
If you want to check the Stretch Chairs out for yourself, you can! If you are lucky enough to be near Milan be sure to visit the Salone de Mobile, Satellite Booth 13B starting today and ending on the 19th! See more here.

This stunning pendant is part of Moonbasket, a project started by designer and artist Dani Le Roy from Cape Town. This community based project involves a dynamic team of people and all natural materials like string and braids made from cotton and jute.
The unique quality of each of these lamps combines with their simple, honest look to create their luxurious appeal. In fact, the artists’ idea was to emphasize the point that crochet is one of the few crafts that can only be done by people and not replaced by machines, and that honest handmade beauty is certainly apparent here. These vases give a whole new meaning to industrial design. Made out of industrial materials with some colored lacquer to make them pretty, these vases add a complement new element of style to your home. What I enjoy most about the vases is the element of the unexpected. Sure we’ve all seen vases before and most of us have seen PVC pipes at one point or another. But I never expected to see this, and that’s why I like it! See more about these vases here.

Ilse Crawford designed this lamp for Wästberg, which I found while perusing Magazin . It is made of wood, porcelain, and iron, an odd combo. According to the website, materials impact our emotional psyche and project a variety of feelings (do you think that they do?)

Produced by Gallery FUMI and Studio Toogood, Corn Craft was a site-specific installation designed to highlight the properties of one simple, agrarian material: corn. By using traditional materials, methods and craftsmanship, sustainable design can created. Nic Webb’s hand-carved wooden utensils were the perfect tools for an earthy feast, complemented by mouth-blown glass with a tiny barley motif by Max Lamb and Gemma Holt. Nacho Carbonell used corn as the base material for furniture, and The Modern Pantry served up corn-based recipes served by waiters attired for the setting.

Today I bring you some very interesting work from Jennifer Anderson. The first image is part of her Material Series, in which Anderson created the same chair in five different materials. Shown here from left to right are mud, wax, and wood. Her collection also includes grass and bronze. I think it is so interesting to see the emphasis placed on the material rather than the form, which is normally the first thing most of us look at.

Anderson was very intrigued by the chairs she created in mud, so taking it a step further she decided to “remake” several modern classics (pictured here is Wegner’s Wishbone Chair). The focus this time was permanence/impermanence. On her website she does not go on to say what she means by this, but for me it proves the staying power of great design. Even made in mud, this chair is distinctly Wenger and the fact that is made with mud doesn’t change that. Now how many designers can you say that about? Pieces from the Mud Series are available for purchase by special order via Anderson’s website.

Oscar Cederwall from Bålsta, Sweden converts the Bonde TV Add-on into a handsome sideboard. Oscar says, “I did this hack a couple of years ago. The color of my Bonde side board is not available any more as far as I know. The main reason for why I decided to build my own side board from Bonde is because I liked the frosted glass doors and I really like the CD drawers for the Bonde series. I don’t think there is anything like them in any other Ikea series.
