2011 Year in Review: WTF

Every now and then, products, rooms and installations catch our eye, and we find ourselves thinking, “WTF?” We’ve rounded up eleven of our favorite “What were they thinking?” items for an end-of-year WTF extravaganza. Ghost Urns Yes, these are what they seem: ghoulish ghost-shaped urns for ashes — actual ashes. Designed by Anna Marinenko, they’re fitted with a glass test tube compartment for the ashes, and the interior walls are done in pretty pastel hues. Definitely for those with a morbid (healthy?) sense of humor. Hair Clip On Hair Created by Stockholm-based studio Humans Since 1982, this simple hair clip offers a slice of life, that is, the part of a woman’s face still visible while wearing a niqab veil

Wonderful Winter Whites

Happy First Day of Winter!

How is the weather in your neck of the woods – is it winter-like? It’s been fairly unseasonable in North Jersey the past few days – with warm temperatures and thunderstorms filling the air!

Even still, today marks the first day of winter – the Winter Solstice – so our days won’t be as dark as early as they have been. And even though it’s been warm lately, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t prepare for the cold to come – which is exactly what I’m doing with these cozy winter whites.

These whites have me thinking of cozy beds with knitted comforters and warm faux furs. Can you see yourself running down that bright white hallway and jumping into the coziness?

If you’re not cuddling under the faux fur, then you better stay warm and cozy with some bright white flowers surround by it. I don’t know about you, but I certainly wouldn’t mind staring at that flower arrangement all day. Especially if a huge white feather tree was nearby. Forget Christmas – I’d leave that baby up all winter long!

With furs, feathers, cozy knits and bright whites on my mind – what’s making you think of winter?

De La Espada’s Park Ave Collection

De La Espada’s new Park Avenue collection, created by designer Soren Rose, has a distinctly Scandinavian feel, but with a contemporary New York touch. It evolved out of a project the designer was doing on Park Avenue in New York City. The pieces were all designed for specific, real people.

Recipe Radar: Christmas Morning Breakfast

While sifting through Pinterest,  I saw a recipe marked “for Christmas morning” and it got me thinking about traditions that many people have while they open presents. My grandma always made a Christmas tree out of cinnamon buns and decorated it with green and red. Does your family have any traditions like this?

If you don’t, you’ve come to the right spot! I’ve put together six different recipes to keep on your radar that would be great for Christmas morning – most because they’re festive but a couple because they’re easy – so you can focus on other things (like opening gifts 0r in my case probably wrapping the last few!).

And if you have kids – I love the Santa pancakes and Christmas tree French toast – how adorable!

So anyway, here are the recipes!

1) Cinnamon Roll Wreath
2) Fruit Christmas Tree
3) Big Pine French Toast
4) Santa Pancakes
5) Green Chili Egg Puff
6) Egg Brunch Casserole (in the crockpot!)

Modern Dish Racks

As you know, we’re knee-deep in a kitchen renovation , currently waiting for our tile to arrive. One of the things we desperately hate looking at is our ugly dish drying rack / drainer. Despite having a dishwasher, we still often find ourselves hand-washing some dishes, so we still need a drying rack. Did you know there are modern dish drying rack options out there?
