August 2013 Summer Series: Beautiful Backyards and Outdoor Accents

As we enter into August, the last month of summer in New Jersey, I am soaking in every second that I can be outdoors enjoying the warm sun and robust natural landscapes in full bloom.  Some of my favorite places to relax are the wonderful spots around my friend’s homes that are absolutely perfect for this summer weather. Beautiful gardens and backyards are a wonderful touch to any home décor, the exterior is just as important as the interior especially during these summer months when we love to gather with friends and family outside. Landscape is an important feature to your home garden but outdoor furniture accents can really breathe new life into a backyard as well.

Creative Furniture Made With Rubber by Wout Wessemius

Netherlands-based designer Wout Wessemius takes a look at rubber, one of his favorite materials, in a series of home furnishings, and eventually outdoor structures, called Project RUBBER . Curiosity led him to see just what the material could do, so he began by using old rubber inner tubes and stretching them around parts of furniture and objects. Wessemius not only stretches it tautly, he lets the rubber drape loosely for different effects. Depending on how the rubber is attached, various looks can be achieved.

Get Cozy with Heated Outdoor Furniture by Galanter & Jones

While I was at Dwell on Design 2013 , I stopped by the Galanter & Jones booth to see a fairly unassuming, curvy modern bench with some nice-looking metal legs. But then designer Aaron Jones asked me to sit down, something I don’t do at trade shows often because it’s hard to get up again, but this time I obliged. And all of a sudden, my backside was getting toasty! Someone had finally answered my prayers—a heated outdoor lounge! Called Helios, the smooth contemporary design is nice and ergonomic, great for lounging or for good conversation. When you plug it in—using about as much energy as a hair dryer—it gets all nice and warm, like that feeling when you first get into a hot tub but much less wet! The thing I love best about this is that it’s versatile—it can be used anywhere from those cold desert nights to chilly Fall evenings in the East. Plus, it’s made of stone so it’s cool to the touch when it’s warm outside

Get Out! DVELAS Furniture Made from Sails

A new company from Spain called DVELAS is making limited edition outdoor furniture from old sails. Created by a group of Spanish architects and designers, DVELAS takes old sails and re-uses them so that they don’t end up in the trash. Instead, they’re transformed into contemporary, comfortable heavy duty outdoor seating. With over six different series of furniture, DVELAS has created a pretty cool line. Each piece comes with information about the sail’s origin such as the port and boat it came from, the type of sail, and the material and original sailmaker.

Ideal Outdoor Space

Are you sick of hearing about outdoor furniture, outdoor spaces or anything outdoor related on this blog? I hope not! I’m guessing since we’re just near the beginning of Summer there can’t be many people sick of hanging out outside yet. Or ever, but that’s another story!

Anyway, after all the talk of outdoor spaces and string lights and BBQs, I decided to create a moodboard for my own ideal space. I mentioned sometime last week that I would love to have enough space for dining, lounging and sunning, but since realistically I only have room for dining and sunning, I’ve only included those here. We do have a pool, but it certainly isn’t as pretty as the one I’ve included – but I’m not complaining!

Now that I’ve shared my ideal outdoor space – tell me what’s one thing you dream of for yours?
