After last week’s Friday Five with Michael Graves I figured it would be all downhill from there, but not so! I am excited to have Spanish artist-designer Jaime Hayon as this week’s F5 guest. Hayon’s wide client base spans diverse functions and mediums, including domestic furniture for b.d. ediciones, Fritz Hansen ( FAVN sofa ), Bernhardt Design Established and Sons, Moooi, Gaia and Gino, among others

Ten architecture students from Columbia University GSAPP have recently completed Polymorphic , a kinetic installation in the form of a bench. Utilizing an innovative design and engineering solution inspired by the kinetic action of a see-saw and the reverberating motion of a slinky, the double-sided bench is made of a series of 119 interconnected sections and an interactive balance board. The sections are connected via an inventive pivot and bolt system, allowing the vertical movement of one section to be picked up by others down the line.

I love when art is functional like this coffee table, whose base is made from an old plane engine. Currently on display at Decoratum Gallery in London, the Cylinder Radial Engine Table is made from a US Army Boeing-Stearman PT-13 engine acquired from the Canadian Museum of Flight, Langley, British Columbia. Constructed between 1936 and 1938, the innovative piece features a simple clear glass top so you can see through to the complex engine workings below. The table can be purchased through Decoratum Gallery

How cute and clever is this door mat?
It sweetly invites guests in and then tricks them with a quirky message to go away! I wonder how many people would actually notice the message when leaving. Probably not many! Especially if this fun and funky doormat was in front of one of these awesomely colorful front doors shown below.
What do you think about these colorful front doors? Could you see yourself with a whimsical door in a vibrant color or would you rather spruce up your front door with the funny welcome mat?

Streamers as decor for parties have always been versatile for any age. They’re affordable, colorful and add quick pizzazz to any room or venue. And, now decorating with streamers when you’re entertaining doesn’t have to be in the same old twisted across the ceiling way that we’re used to.
As Martha Stewart shows us in the first image, you can line streamers across a table to make a fun table cloth and then wrap the leftovers around jars to create matching candle holders as table decor.
Or, you can still hang streamers across the ceilings and tables yet you can add flavor to them by manipulating them. You can cut the edges of streamers to have fringe, or throw them through the sewing machine to create cute ruffles. Or, you can also make your own streamers by cutting paper to create zig-zag streamers. There are so many ways to spice up streamers for your next party, no matter how old the guest(s) of honor are.
How do you decorate with streamers?
