Crossbow Table by Nathan Day Design

Designed and individually handcrafted in Yallingup, Western Australia by Nathan Day Design , these Crossbow tables are one of my favorite combinations: a glass top and a wood base. I love how the bases are sculptural and the glass merely floats on top, serving as a window through which you can view the sculpture. Each table is made of cherry wood and, since each are handcrafted, you can choose your custom size

Help kickstart the largest IVAR hack

Materials: Ikea Ivar Chair Description: Our Ikea hack could quite possibly be the largest Ikea hack ever! This summer we will be constructing a 1000 square foot pavilion made of 400 Ikea Ivar chairs arrayed and stacked in a 3-dimensional sine wave surface rising above the ground in Freedom Park, Atlanta Georgia. It’s public art, but also usable in that people can actually sit on it to socialize and spend time in the park sitting in the chairs. The design is very particular to the Ikea Ivar chair because the slightly bent angle of the seatback creates a special texture to the sculpture

Friday Five with John Paul Philippe

John-Paul Philippe is a multi-talented painter and designer who divides his time between his Soho work studio, bucolic upstate home and roster of clients around the world. His distinctively modernist painting style put him on the map, and John-Paul now references this clean, graphic style in projects as diverse as furniture design, murals, large scale sculpture and even a private chapel in the Dominican Republic. John-Paul has also collaborated with Barneys New York on design components for a dozen stores, both in the US and Japan. John-Paul’s latest collaboration with west elm successfully meshes his original and whimsical look with the west elm aesthetic in the form of various chic and covetable new pieces including pillows, sculptures and framed drawings. Here’s some good stuff that’s been influencing John-Paul lately: 1.

Calmares Lamp by Strala

The newest design from Strala is called Calmares, a light sculpture in two sizes that was designed to include several dozen energy-saving fluorescent tubes, each of which consumes just 24 watts of energy. “Calmares I” has 73 connected bulbs to form a spherical light and the smaller “Calmares II” has 13. The clustering and precise ordering allows the energy-saving bulbs to become graceful objects of beauty. The lamps resemble a freeze frame of an exploding firework or a starry sky, emitting soft, warm light

SWON Design

Cascade, the sculpture above by SWON Design, is a cast glass wall situated in a landscaped garden setting on the shores of Lake Ontario in Toronto. It measure 7′ high by 10′ long. The cast glass wall is made up of 77 ladle poured glass blocks in varying tones of aqua blue/green with texture simulating flowing water. The cast glass wall incorporates a water feature that allows for a controlled spill over the glass. Another design by SWON is the Glass Rock Garden, pictured above.

Air Tree

So as cool as it might be, it’s kind of impractical to have a tree inside. Fear not though, you can still enjoy perfectly cleaned air with the Air Tree. From designer Seung Jun Jeong, this modern “tree” cleans your air via a HEPA filter.  It sucks the air in, removes all of its impurities, and releases the refreshed air out from its top.  Definitely a good use paired with a modern look that almost makes it double as a sculpture. Throw in some cool LED lights and I’m sold.
