New York-based artist and industrial designer William Lee just released a pair of chairs as part of a group of new work that was geometrically inspired. The Conform chairs at first sight do not look like chairs at all. The minimalist seat is composed of a misshapen cube-like frame in neon green or pink and a seat made of stretched woven elastic that “conforms” to the body. Interior designer David Harris is a founding partner and one of the forces behind a fabulous pair of New York City furniture companies, The New Traditionalists and ducduc . While The New Traditionalists designs are entrenched in the classics, the approach is wholly of this era, with a multitude of custom, come-up-with-your-own-design fabrics and finishes. ducduc is a modern dream for kids, all glossy, sleek, and white, accented with bright color bursts. The design magic happens in the Soho studio, and the building takes place not far beyond, in facilities in New England, using old-fashioned furniture making techniques. You can get a glimpse of Harris’ classic and current day influences in this week’s Friday Five

Haldane Martin of Cape Town, South Africa designed this complex three-dimensional Polyhedra Modular Coffee Table . The design was inspired by the images of human bones that are seen by electron microscopes, as well as the Weaire-Phelan structure, which depicts foam bubbles that are equal in size.

Designer Rachel Ballantine is challenging our perception of comfort by creating a minimalist chair from one piece of CNC-cut wood that acts as a frame. Based on what materials you find most comfortable (or uncomfortable), fill the chair frame with your own “idea of comfort.” Use plush toys, pillows or blankets… or pencils?
