Make Something From Nothing

Red Stripe® , the Jamaican beer company, recently teamed up with London-based Japanese sound artist Yuri Suzuki to create a series of cultural projects that celebrate the DIY culture of the brand’s Jamaican roots. Suzuki is best known for his sick homemade music machines including a flute made from an electric kettle and Scalectrix tracks made from old vinyl records.

NewspaperWood by Vij5 and Mieke Meijer

NewspaperWood by Vij5 and Mieke Meijer flips the idea of materials on its head. Instead of using wood as a source to make paper, NewspaperWood uses the paper to make wood! The design was Meijer’s project at the Design Academy Eindhoven, who decided it was time to create something useful from old newspapers that no one wanted. For the launch in Milan at Salone , Vij5 invited some designers to create products using the NewspaperWood materials

Danish Design—I Like It! by Jasper Morrison

When Christian Holmsted Olesen, curator at the Design Museum Denmark , first approached Jasper Morrison about participating in an exhibit, showcasing the esteemed designer’s work was what he had in mind. Morrison, however, countered with an altogether different proposal: that he curate a collection featuring Danish designs he loved, that he would hand pick from the museum’s 20th-century holdings. Thus was born Danish Design—I Like It! Rather than pull every obvious iconic piece, like Arne Jacobsen’s Swan chair or Finn Juhl’s Poet sofa, Morrison opted for the more mundane. According to Olesen, about two-thirds of the 150 objects in the show are pieces that Danes might have had, or still have, in their own homes.
