I tried to get to the opening of Matter ‘s MatterMade Collection Number Two opening during ICFF but it was super packed. So I was happy to recently get info about the new collection in my inbox! The collection, which is currently on display at the Matter NYC store, highlights new contemporary American design. There are two categories in the collection – the first is a hybrid of design and art and an experiment in materials. The second takes a look at more streamlined, commercial aspect of design.

Young Belgian designer Pieter Desmijter has created a table for math lovers. Reminiscent of the square root sign, the table features a cubby perfect for storing magazines. While the table looks hard, it’s actually coated in foam so you can comfortable sit on it, too.

“Aiguille” means “needle” in French, which is a great name for this lamp by AMINIMAL Studio . Its extra-sharp mathematical lines were inspired by drawings and illustration. I like that from below, it looks like a kaleidoscope.

Experimentation and the use of distinct materials and production techniques were and are still the foundation of the design philosophy behind the studio. Over the years, Thien has worked and experimented with injection moulding, fiber glass, laser cutting, concrete moulding, Corian, and blown glass, amongst other materials
