Log Chop Bench

The Practice of Everyday Design has a new piece — the Log Chop Bench , which represents an exploration in process-based design. They decided to approach the concept of this one-off piece by setting up a series of parameters that would define the final product without them relying on drawings or a concrete final image. Given little instruction and a loose sketch the log was debarked and the seats were axed out by a professional “Lumberjill.” The roughly chopped log seats were then mediated by the fine, hand-sewn upholstery by a motorcycle saddle maker. The project was a fluid evolution from an abstract idea into a physical sculpture that represents a dialogue between the designers and their collaborators. The Log Chop Bench will be auctioned off at the Stellar Living 2011 Contemporary Art & Design Auction for Mercer Union in Toronto, Ontario, on May 12, 2011.

Lack Lazy Susan Coffee Table

Materials: Lack Side Table Legs and Lazy Susan Table Tops Description: This creation was inspired by the 24 left over Lack Side Table legs I had after I created a headboard for my King size bed (See the post entitled “Headboard fit for a King-sized bed” for more details on that project). This table took a couple of sequential steps before finally assembling each piece to form the final table. First I designed three “+” shaped legs using five Lack Side Table legs, per leg and used double sided carpet tape to hold each “+” shape secure. For each “+” table leg, I cut out a 7″ diameter piece of MDF and attached each “+” leg to the MDF using 14 x 1″ flat head screws after pre-drilling with a countersink bit. I used metal brackets on the opposite side of the “+” legs to secure the whole leg together.

Husk by Patricia Urquiola for B&B Italia

I’m digging the new Husk chair by Patricia Urquiola for B&B Italia . Made of a recycled plastic shell and soft cushions, the Husk armchair comes in a variety of fabrics and leathers as well as different finishes. An ottoman is also available. Aurelia Eichhornia by Studio Jo Meesters

At Salone , Studio Jo Meesters presented its new project entitled Aurelia Eichhornia, a series of lamps developed specifically for the presentation of Leolux during Salone where the Dutch furniture company exhibited its new collection. The presentation was set up like Alice in Wonderland meets an underwater world with oversized water lilies and colorful floral carpets also created by Studio Jo Meesters. Inspired by water plants and jellyfish, the Aurelia Eichhornia lights feature a knitted textile surrounding a glass pendant.

Alfred Coffee Table by Bonaguro Giorgio

The Alfred Coffee Table, Bonaguro Giorgio , is inspired by a butler or waiter’s five fingers holding a tray. The tray is represented by the top rounded part (with the holes of the legs) and the colored removable glass top. The table is made of Cristalplant® and the built-in top of tempered glass, lacquered in green, orange, red, grey and yellow. Loop Chair by Sophie de Vocht for Casamania

The Loop Chair by Dutch designer Sophie de Vocht for Casamania is part chaise part carpet. Inspired by Sophie’s interest in the technique of tufting, which is typically used to make rugs, she created a simple metal frame over which to loop the textiles in different shapes. As the chaise drops to the floor, the loops become exaggerated until they fan out onto the floor.
