Oshibe mean “stamen” in Japanese, and was what inspired Tomomi Sayuda to create this nest/music box/lamp/creative plaything. Also inspired by eggs, plants, light, and the moon, Sayuda created an interactive sculpture for both children and adults.

I took a photo of the Private Cloud by Manuel Kloker on the floor of ICFF, and as I stood there, I watched the crowd. It was funny to see the attendees get in and out of it, rock it, and talk about it. There was much more crowd discussion about “doing the nasty” and how that would work rather than the actual design of the product. The wow factor of this product is certainly there. But, in reality, you can place blocks to stabilize the bed just like a regular bed.

I loved the BRC Designs booth at ICFF. I spent quite some time in there just touching and playing with everything. BRC is Benjamin Rollins Caldwell, who loves designing using odd and unusual materials, making very functional items out of them. Every piece asks you to interact with it, but they don’t feel over-designed or unusable.

Studio Manzano recently launched an online store , and in addition, this new magazine rack called Wall Press . Like their other products it is only one sheet of steel cut in a cool way and bent into shape. © 2010 Design Milk | Posted by Jaime in Home Furnishings | Permalink | 2 comments | Tweet This | Share on Facebook

Materials: (1) Helmer drawer unit on casters, (1) Vika Amon table top, (1) Hyllis shelving unit, (2) discontinued Ikea shoe racks, (1) Lack shelf, (1) Kolja mirror. The only extra hardware needed were some standard screws, drywall anchors and four small L shaped brackets. By far the most interesting event I attended at ICFF was Designglut’s Uncomfortable Conversations . The idea was inspired by the following quote: A person’s success in life can usually be measured by the number of uncomfortable conversations he or she is willing to have.” – Timothy Ferriss Designers Kegan Fisher and Liz Kinnmark of Designglut curated 16 pieces that were designed to start “uncomfortable but important conversations.” Here are some of the pieces that were in the exhibit: Pre-Handshake Handshake Device by Dominic Wilcox Night Terror by Chrissy Conant It’s Not You, It’s Me / It’s Not Me, It’s You by Ana Linares Chi-Merica by Paul Loebach In Case by Materious Uncomfortable Typographic Situations by MSLK Kevin Carpet Bench by Will Robison of Subports (yup, really a dude rolled up in a carpet.) Heavy by Karl Zahn You can see them all and read the descriptions on the Uncomfortable Conversations website. I had to round up my favorite press pieces that I received from ICFF. First the biz cards: There were two business cards that immediately made me say “wow”! First, PIE Studio’s card folds into a piece of pie. Clever, right? Even cooler is their brochure, which is also shaped like a slice of pie, and unfolds into an entire pie! Yum. And next, designer Ufuk Keskin , who created the Sheetseat , a folding chair from one piece of plywood

I am a huge fan of Balanced Design , but I was especially pleased with the new pieces that they showed at ICFF. The new peacock design is certainly my favorite, but they have new bird’s feet and leaf patterns as well. Also, last year they introduced rugs, which I think are simply adorable. © 2010 Design Milk | Posted by Jaime in Home Furnishings | Permalink | 1 comment | Tweet This | Share on Facebook
