London Design Festival 2012: Dementia Music Box by Chloe Meineck

University of Brighton graduate Chloe Meineck  was exhibiting her Music Memory Box at Tent London as part of the London Design Festival . She spent two years conducting research into the positive effect familiar music can have for those with dementia – listening to music from certain periods of their lives can help trigger even their most inaccessible memories. She was driven to act on her findings and so created this gorgeous music box. It’s immediately tactile and reminds me of boxes full of little treasures I had as a child. Each object represents a happy memory and plays a certain piece of music when placed in the center of the box. Chloe developed this box especially for a lady called Barbara

Modular Furniture You Can Arrange The Way You Want: Hocky by Marcin Wielgosz

Hocky is not your average seating collection – it’s ridiculously smart. Designed by Marcin Wielgosz of Merely , Hocky is made of various sized segments of sofas and chairs with integrated tables that you can pick and choose to form the configuration you want. The movable wood tables can act as armrests, end tables, workstations, or TV dinner trays (remember those?)

Swing Table by Christopher Duffy for Duffy London

You might remember when we posted about this in concept a couple of years ago. Well, now it’s a reality and it’s even better than we imagined. Designed by Christopher Duffy for Duffy London , the four-poster table suspends eight chairs and a light from its frame. For anyone who wants to put some fun into a boring business meeting or some excitement into mealtimes, the Swing Table is the way to go. Available in a range of finishes and sizes, the playful design will most definitely be the talk of any room.

LYHTY Lighted Indoor/Outdoor Tent by Erkko Aarti

Helsinki-based designer Erkko Aarti came up with a way to beat the long, dark months that last throughout the winter in Finland. It’s called LYHTY  and I spotted it at this year’s Habitare . It’s a tent-like space that can be placed in public spaces or even somewhere in your house

London Design Festival 2012: designjunction

designjunction was one of the most exciting shows of London Design Festival . The venue alone was enough to look forward to. Built in the 1960s by the Ministry of Works as a Royal Mail Sorting Office, it became largest in the UK in the 90s before closing down. Since then it has been used for everything from an illegal rave in October 2010, to an Alexander McQueen fashion show earlier this year. The design had a lot to live up to.

Piecing Together Furniture Like Building Blocks: Sam Scott

UK-based designer and craftsman Sam Scott uses the scraps that pile up in the corner of an East London workshop to create surprisingly modern and artistic furniture. Working with Tim Greany and Dom Shanks as Constructive and Co., Sam considers his work like the LEGO of the cabinet-making world – piecing wood together to build creative and – at time – eye-popping creations. He will be showing his work at Canary Wharf in a new exhibition that runs through mid-November. What: Pieces Together: Carol McNicoll Ceramics Sam Scott Furniture When: September 24, 2012 – November 16, 2012 Where: Lobby, One Canada Square, Canary Wharf, E14 5AB Share This: Twitter | Facebook | Discover more great design by following Design Milk on Twitter and Facebook

Deconstruction: Topissimo Collection by Nanimarquina

Barcelona-based rug studio nanimarquina , founded in 1987 by Nani Marquina, has been creating contemporary textiles for the floor crafted in India, Morocco, Pakistan, and Spain. This month’s  Deconstruction  takes us to India, for the manufacture of one of the company’s most popular, and surely the most fun (polka dots in relief!): a fuchsia and purple concoction from the Topissimo collection, which won a Red Dot Design Award in 2003. Above: Nani Marquina with some of the women who manufactured the Topissimo Collection in the Indian workshops. The Topissimo Collection was designed by Nani Marquina in 2002. These are the first design sketches.
