LUGI is a Czech furniture maker that makes custom pieces for architects and interior designers, but in 2011 LUGI launched its own collection of furniture under the supervision of Matej Chabera . More recently, they opened a furniture showroom in the renovated industrial building of a former coal mill. I was particularly taken with Barstool 02 , a solid ash stool with a creative detail.

In this month’s Deconstruction , Ian Riedel of Sonoma-based metal fabrication studio, Werken Design , leads us through the process of creating a rusted steel and reclaimed wood table. We get to see how the design evolves, through whim and necessity, hearing his musings along the way. We learned about his studio through CustomMade , an online marketplace that connects customers with the skilled makers

Every once in a while an idea stops me in my tracks because I can’t believe how good it is – and this is one of them. We’ve all lived in tiny spaces at some point in our adult lives (and maybe you still do!) and Orla Reynolds’ design As if from nowhere… would have solved oh so many problems. A fully functioning bookcase that surprisingly houses two tables and four dining chairs is a pretty smart idea, yes

Designer Yuval Tal has made a series of tables from wooden dowels wrapped with a metal ring called Chopped . The metal ring holds the wood pieces together so there’s no need for glue or screws. Made in three sizes, the tables’ surfaces have colored parts, inspired by color blindness tests. Each table has a uniquely designed top with grey, orange or green paint and lacquer. Giovanni Talocci has designed a line of freestanding bioethanol fireplaces and planters for the Italian manufacturer Falper . The best part about these minimalist designs is that they are portable. Instead of everyone gathering around a built-in fireplace, the fire can be moved to wherever the people are – each piece comes with a carrying handle.

From storage pieces to tables, Keir Townsend has created a series of art-meets-furniture for Italian manufacturer Laurameroni . Reminiscent of art sculptures of Donald Judd, these metallic furnishings play with light and trick the eye. The process of making the pieces involves applying a patinated surface to metal strips and then folding them onto the furniture.
