Happy Valentine’s Day!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Did you know that an estimated $17.6 billion will be spent on Valentine’s Day this year? That is a LOT of dough!

Just in the United States,  26 million heart-shaped boxes of candy and 170 million flower bouquets and plants will be gifted to all sorts of sweethearts. Ladies, if you don’t have a sweetheart, rest assured – 15% of women order flowers for themselves!

Are you the type that finds Valentine’s commercialized and unnecessary or do you prefer to embrace the cheesy cliches of it all?

Weekly Six: 2.10.12

Happy Friday! Are you ready for Valentine’s Day? How about the weekend?

We’ll start our weekly six links off with some Valentine’s Day decor above. I wouldn’t mind if my foyer looked like that all year round!

Have you noticed an abundance of neon lately? (I write this wearing a very neon pink shirt.) From clothing to home decor, it seems to be popping up here and there – and painting a door bright neon  is a fun way to incorporate it!

On the contrary, I’m also loving soft palettes lately – like this grey and light pink combination above. Which do you prefer?

If you love the combination of tomato soup and grilled cheese, check out this awesome recipe. I made it this week and it was delicious!!

Check out these modular soft blocks that are modeled after traditional concrete blocks and can be used to create various pieces of furniture.

Deep Navy Blue

Don’t you just love a good navy blue? The navy blue that is really navy – not almost black and not that peacocky blue. Ooh, I sure do!

I especially love navy blue walls accompanied by bright white crown molding. Or how about that monochromatic navy wall and lacquered fireplace? Yes, please!

What do you think about navy blue as a wall color?

In The Mood for Some Mid-Century Mod

Today I’m feeling a mid-century modern kinda vibe. I’m not quite sure, but it may or may not be because of the Matthew Broderick / Ferris Bueller commerical from the Super Bowl. You know, because of Cameron’s house!

I’m drawn to mid-century design that focuses more on the modern, not the type of MCM decor that is frozen in time. Which is why I’m loving the mid-century home shown above.

Located in Salt Lake City, it has all of my dream MCM qualities: classic architecture with updated materials and appliances. Can’t you just see yourself entertaining with dinner and pool parties all the time at this home? Plus, it has the perfect pool house that can be your own private cabana. Head over to Move Modern to check out the rest of the home – it’s a must-see!

What are your feelings on mid-century modern decor?

Lunch: Bring or Buy?

Lately, I’ve been purchasing a salad similar to this one here at a local cafe by my office for $6 a day. I’ve been telling myself that it’s nice to support a local business, but then of course, I’m think “hello you’ve got to support yourself too!” Sometimes, after I cook dinner and clean up the kitchen, the last thing I want to do is make myself lunch. But on the other hand, really – how hard is it to throw a salad together in a tupperware?

And that entire paragraph is a conversation I have with myself approximately four times a week. So, I’m just wondering about everyone else out there – are you in a similar situation? I can assume that the situation differs a bit for those that work at home, but then perhaps buying lunch out can be seen as an excuse to get out of the house.  Hmm..

Well, whatever your situation may be – do you bring/make your lunch most of the time or do you just buy it? I’d love to know!

Wanna Spoon?

Wanna Spoon Chair? Not the other kind of spoon, sorry!

Designed by Philipp Aduatz, the Spoon Chair is an innovative modern chair made from carbon fiber reinforced polymer. As this material is used for motor sports and aerospace equipment, it is perfect for the unique shape of the Spoon Chair because of its high strength yet low weight.

I wouldn’t mind leaning back into the contoured shape of this chair and taking a nice siesta – how about you?!

Would You Rather?: Bedroom Lighting

Today we’re talking bedroom lighting. There are plenty of ways to light up this room – but we’re only focusing on two. So if you had absolutely no other choices, which would you rather….pendant lamps hanging on each side of the bed or one large chandelier in the center of the room?

With bedside pendant lamps, you can go big and bold enough so that they are the focal point of the room, as seen in both of the example images above. But, would you still need other lighting around the room? Depending on the size of your bedroom, you probably would. Perhaps some track lighting from the ceiling,  or various table lamps and floor lamps scattered around would do the trick.

A chandelier in the center of the home gives you the freedom to bring the drama right into the center of the room. You can still add table lamps to your nightstands, but I would probably go for a subdued lamp as to not take away from the fabulosity of a glamorous chandelier or large pendant light.

But it all depends on personal preference – so tell me, would you rather bedside pendant lamps or a large chandelier if you had to choose for your bedroom?

Super Bowl Sunday

Although we started with some Valentine’s Day inspiration yesterday and the ideas are flowing, they’ve got to be put on the back burner for some Super Bowl Sunday ideas, since it’s just a few days away. It’s kind of ironic when you think about it, if you stereotype the two events as one super-macho and one super-girly, that they’re so close to each other! Fine by me, especially if my guy wins a nice chunk of change in a Super Bowl pool, I better have a nice V-day gift coming my way!

Anyway, I heard on the radio today that approximately 7 million people call out of work the Monday after Super Bowl. Can you imagine!?! I didn’t think it was that crazy of a day, but apparently so.

Will you be doing anything special on Super Bowl Sunday? The image above is from Party City, so if you need some last minute decorations - they’re the place to go! And if you’re not sure what to make – check out the 101 best Super Bowl Recipes that is an awesome round-up of everything from wings, dips, sandwiches, more wings, and desserts.
