Reinvention; Writing History in Aluminum

Last weekend was the first ever “Design Milk Presents” event, Reinvention; Writing History Through Aluminum , featuring new works by Brad Ascalon and Frederick McSwain (AM) for Neal Feay Studio , an exhibition at Bobby Berk Home (it runs through May 27 th so you can still catch it!) The objects, made of solid aluminum (quite weighty!) came from an accidental meeting between Brad Ascalon and Santa Barbara-based Neal Feay Studio. Alex Rasmussen, third generation owner of Neal Feay, has been exploring new ways to push aluminum manufacturing to a whole new level. He’s recently partnered with artists and now, he’s pioneering Neal Feay’s first venture into modern product design. Mixtape Table by Jeff Skierka

Jeff Skierka created this coffee table that pays homage to a technology of the past: the cassette tape. I’m particularly fond of it because it reminds me of my youth… quickly hitting “record” on my boom box to try to capture “Can’t Touch This” by MC Hammer as it played on the radio, popping those tapes into my portable tape players for a walk around the mall, and then into the stereo of my first car.

Happy Memorial Day!

It’s Memorial Day and we’ve got beautiful outdoor spaces on our minds. Hopefully you’re reading this before or after a lovely weekend in a similar space as the ones above!

As you can tell from last week’s post – I’m smitten with outdoor string lights, so of course they had to make an appearance in these at least one of these spaces. Maybe one day I’ll have a space that has enough room for a cozy outdoor sofa and dining set and lounge chairs. And a pool would be nice, too!

Well, enough dreaming – that’s what a holiday will do to you! What would your dream outdoor space look like?

Nendo for Lasvit

Nendo paired with the Czech glassmakers, Lasvit , to create a collection of hand-blown glass lighting and objects. This is Nendo’s first foray into the glass world and the pieces are quite beautiful. Each piece is unique with slight variations, as that’s the unpredictability of them being hand-blown. The forms are striking, yet elegant all while remaining simple in their overall shape

Standing desk with Utby legs

Materials: Vika Amon top, Utby base, Ekby Jarpen shelf, Capita legs Description: I too have joined the standing desk movement and my back has never felt better. My first attempt was to construct my own desk, inspired by several I had seen online. I made a frame out of pipe segments. It was thin, but strong, and looked really cool… except for the top.

ICFF 2012: Part 1

Another year, another ICFF . To be entirely honest, I thought last year’s show was a bit of a downer but in contrast, this year’s show seemed more upbeat, positive and there were quite a few things we absolutely loved.

ICFF 2012: Part 2

We really loved the Kohler booth; it was probably our favorite booth (and not just because they had a phone charging station !) I think they did a great job of embracing and promoting their collaboration with Jonathan Adler . The booth, which was actually a shipping container painted chartreuse, was over the top: the staff were colorfully dressed and when Jonathan himself stopped by, they served fancy blue drinks and blue and yellow cotton candy.
