Continuing with the outdoor kick, today we’ve got an Etsy roundup of outdoor pillows. There are so many fun patterns and colors that I don’t know how I’d choose! I did just put in a charcoal gray outdoor rug, so perhaps something to coordinate with that would add some colorful coziness to our dining chairs, since we tend to spend a lot of time lounging on them!
Do you have any outdoor pillows in your backyard? How do you display them?

While we were at ICFF, we stopped by the Nani Marquina booth to have a chat with Nani herself. The company, which is celebrating 25 years, has created a special collection this year for the occasion. I sat and talked to Nani about this new collection, which is a bit of a departure from her past rugs. Figura Humana, 1948 The entire set consists of artworks by Eduardo Chillida , a Spanish artist and sculptor. Nani chronicled the life and art of Chillida from 1948 through 1995 in seven works .

Legendary Italian design company Alessi partnered with the equally notorious Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2009 for a collaborative workshop through 3D design and metals called Cranbrook for Alessi . The group of Cranbrook designers included: Adam Shirley, Seth Papac, Katie MacDonald, David Schafer, Jonathan Muecke, Patrick Gavin, John Truex, Richard Nelipovich and Suzanne Beautyman, all lead by Cranbrook 3D Designer-in-Residence, Scott Klinker, and Metalsmithing Artist-in-Residence, Iris Eichenberg. The goal was to “search for new forms in metal through a hands-on, craft process in the metal shop.” The results were presented at an exhibition entitled METAL WORKSHOP: Cranbrook for Alessi coinciding with the re-launch of the flagship Alessi store in Soho, along with ICFF and New York Design Week . Four of the designs created during the workshop are currently in production for Alessi and are aiming for a 2012 launch date.

When you hear the words Whaletone, I’m sure the last thing you think of seeing is a fabulously modern piano. In awesomely bright colors, nonetheless.
As the design of this piano is inspired by the way a whale arches its body when thrusting against waves, it also has a SuperNATURAL Piano Technology which ensures the sound of a classic grand piano. You can learn more about the design of the Whaletone here.
Three of the vivid Whaletones are pictured above, but there are several more available at their site. Of course, I’m loving the pink – which would you choose?

While in New York, we visited the Mondo Collection showroom, a company that is dedicated to bringing modern global design to the US, as well as collecting exceptional designs from up-and-coming designers. We got an exclusive tour of the space and had a great time speaking with Jaime Hayon and up-and-comer Jack Craig .

Are you sick of hearing about outdoor furniture, outdoor spaces or anything outdoor related on this blog? I hope not! I’m guessing since we’re just near the beginning of Summer there can’t be many people sick of hanging out outside yet. Or ever, but that’s another story!
Anyway, after all the talk of outdoor spaces and string lights and BBQs, I decided to create a moodboard for my own ideal space. I mentioned sometime last week that I would love to have enough space for dining, lounging and sunning, but since realistically I only have room for dining and sunning, I’ve only included those here. We do have a pool, but it certainly isn’t as pretty as the one I’ve included – but I’m not complaining!
Now that I’ve shared my ideal outdoor space – tell me what’s one thing you dream of for yours?

Last weekend was the first ever “Design Milk Presents” event, Reinvention; Writing History Through Aluminum , featuring new works by Brad Ascalon and Frederick McSwain (AM) for Neal Feay Studio , an exhibition at Bobby Berk Home (it runs through May 27 th so you can still catch it!) The objects, made of solid aluminum (quite weighty!) came from an accidental meeting between Brad Ascalon and Santa Barbara-based Neal Feay Studio. Alex Rasmussen, third generation owner of Neal Feay, has been exploring new ways to push aluminum manufacturing to a whole new level. He’s recently partnered with artists and now, he’s pioneering Neal Feay’s first venture into modern product design. Turntable slatted tables with optical illusion Closeup of the underside of Turntable One of my favorite pieces is Achilles, a shoehorn. The AM team decided to design a shoehorn for the single reason they wanted to design a sexy shoehorn – named Achilles because their “Achilles heel” is that sometimes they like to design for the sake of making something beautiful.
