This very cool wool rug by Portuguese product designer Rita Botelho was displayed at Dutch Design Week at the end of October. It’s called the Hub Rug, and is an enlarged model of a color swatch set that was conceived for a Portuguese rug manufacturer that sought to organize its available color samples.

This futuristic, throne-like Hex Chair is designed by British-born, Hong Kong-based Michael Young . It’s made from die cast aluminum, in a complex, lost wax gravity injection process performed by Chinese engineers. The limited edition piece will be displayed at Design Miami from November 30 to December 4 by Swedish gallery Modernity . In addition to Young and other high concept 21st century designers, the gallery also represents mid-century masters Hans Wegner, Alvar Aalto, and Arne Jacobsen. Designer Oscar Diaz , who studied in Bordeaux and London and trained in Paris and Tokyo, approaches his work not from a stylistic standpoint, but by examining in what context they’ll be used, and then layering in aspects that reflect its cultural connotations. From metal-coated cutlery created from parts of supermarket-sourced plastic bottles, to glass candle holders in which magnets are incorporated to adjust its height, Diaz’s work is as brainy as it is playful.

Vienna, Austria-based artist Gisela Stiegler began creatively as a trained painter but evolved into a sculptor. Her Lampenfieber series, made from expanded polystyrene waste material carved into functional works of art, includes lighting and wall shelves. Once sculpted and lacquered in one of a few colors you would never know they were made from upcycled salmon fish boxes
