I found this Dining Etiquette 101 image on Pinterest today and it got me thinking about the way I dine – and the way people I typically dine with dine. I definitely don’t follow all of these rules – do you?
I certainly don’t use my fork as a pusher when eating dessert. Nor do I tear my pieces of bread up into small pieces and butter them one by one – I dip the whole piece in some olive oil and scarf it down!
On the flip side, these are definitely good things to know. I like the way you’re supposed to eat soup – that’s very proper. The complete place setting is also appreciated, because I’m not always good with that. Just remember – fork and left have four letters, knife, spoon and right have five letters.
What do you think about Dining Etiquette 101? Do you or those you dine with need a crash course??

Materials: Ikea nightstand (Rast), saw, Watco Danish Oil, 4 table legs, 4 angled top plates with screws, furniture oil, sand paper, tape measure, pencil, screw driver Description: This little Ikea nightstand has been in our family for 30 years and has been through three kids. By the time it got to me it was covered in water stains, chipped veneer and scribbles. But the bones of it were perfect – a little drawer to hide away ugly things like cellphone chargers and ample room for books, clocks, lamps and knick-knacks. This project took about a week and is completely doable in a small apartment. They don't sell this exact nightstand anymore but you can get the same effect using the Ikea Rast Nightstand , minus the drawer

UK workshop Kirv exhibited its amazing powder-coated stainless steel line of outdoor furniture pieces at the London Design Festival last month. Designed by metalsmith Alex Moore, they’re meant to be as much works of vibrant sculpture as functional seating. The pieces, which are handmade to order in Sussex, have been ergonomically honed, so are quite comfortable. They can be left outdoors year round, and require very little maintenance.

The Louxor lamp reminds me of those bug zappers, except this one attracts design enthusiasts, not bugs. Designed by Paris-based designers Léa Padovani & Sébastien Kieffer of Pool , the light resembles a modern 3D kite that one might fly in the TRON world… Share This: Twitter | Facebook | Discover more great design by following Design Milk on Twitter and Facebook . © 2011 Design Milk | Posted by Jaime in Home Furnishings | Permalink | No comments

How fun and interesting are these images found on Pinterest this week?
First of all, I would love having a cutting board over the trash can – wouldn’t you? It would make life so much easier. It also makes it easier to transfer whatever you’re chopping to a bowl or plate. The ideal situation would be just a cutting board slab that pulled out, rather that taking up the entire drawer space!
How about the stenciled ceiling? I love the bronze color of it in contrast with the dark walls – very elegant. I can’t imagine that that was a fun painting job – but the effect and elegance it brings to the bathroom is definitely worth it!
Finally, I’ve never seen an outdoor area quite this seating area in the middle of the pool. Have you? If it were mine, I’d extend the back a little and put stools for those that want to float in the pool while eating and drinking.
Which of these innovative ideas would you want for your home??

Deryn Relph is a British textile designer with a penchant for color and a mean set of upholstery skills – we’ve already featured her work and we were so smitten we wanted to find out how she chooses her vibrant fabrics and makes her psychedelic designs. In keeping with the eco-mantra “reduce, re-use, recycle” Relph re-invents discarded furniture and lampshades, transforming them into contemporary treasures with fibers and yarns sourced predominantly from factory surplus stocks. She shares the steps involved in creating the Renee chair from her Retro Rainbow Rejuvenation collection in this month’s Deconstruction

During the 2011 London Design Festival, Object & Line launched the Moss Table, an experimental table that uses plants to generate energy on a micro level. Based on the research of Cambridge University designers and scientists exploring how moss and algae can be used to power lights and other small scale domestic products, the moss table may one day be able to power your beside electronics, such as lamps or alarm clocks. What would you use plants to power?
