Domesticity has created two new shelves: the Ledge shelf and the Overhang Shelf with Hooks. Sometimes I get so wrapped up in ooh-ing and aah-ing at over-the-top design that I overlook truly good, clean modern and functional design such as these two simple pieces.

A new book arrived on my doorstep from Penguin called Glimmer: How Design Can Transform Your Life and Maybe Even the World by Warren Berger. The book seeks to discuss the “glimmer” moments in design: the moment when a new solution to an old problem is revealed. The book also features the insights of prominent designer Bruce Mau . The book goes beyond the how-to approach and looks at design as a cultural phenomenon — a force of change in today’s world

Young Polish designers are searching their roots for guidance in their contemporary work. Polska Folk was an exhibition at Tent London last month that showcased some of the floor coverings, furniture, lighting and accessories that evolve out of tradition, such as lively felt rugs from Agnieszka Czop & Joanna Rusin, colourful lampshades from Kafti Design, slick stools from Malafor and jolly graphics from Chrum. Other designers whose work was featured include Agnieszka Lasota, Aze Dsign, Bogdan Kosak, Gogo Design, Platform and WWAA Architects.

Looking at this first picture alone I’d say yes. Plenty of us have sat on balconies before without giving it much thought, and unless you are really afraid of heights it’s not usually a problem. Take a closer look at the second image now.

Now, ask yourself again – Would you sit here?  If it’s not completely clear from these images, the Bloomframe is a balcony, but it’s a balcony that is essentially made out of your window.  Your window unfolds into the balcony which you then sit on.  This, I’d really have to think about.  The concept is definitely an innovative one, and it seems to be getting plenty of attention.  I just don’t know if I’d be up for sitting on my window…

Industrial designer David Fox collaborated with Boss Design to create a lounge chair that could’ve earned an A in ultra-advanced woodshop and advanced sewing class (the highest level, the one that all honors-y students would want to get into). Not only can you sit pretty in it, but the chair itself sits pretty by itself.

Sleek stainless steel combines with the delicate look of lace in a collection that includes tables, placemats, luminaries, and more.  This work is a collaboration between mo man tai, Etspirit, and Plauener Sptize and utilizes modern production technology to combine these two seemingly dissimilar elements into a series of captivating works.
