Corn Craft: Crop by Nacho Carbonell

Design studios contributing to the Corn Craft exhibition curated by Studio Toogood and Gallery FUMI kept the focus on corn and wheat. Nacho Carbonell used corn resin, corn juice, ground corn, barley, wheat, oats, cornflakes, and steel rod reinforcements for furniture in the Crop collection designed to evoke the textures and colours of the cornfield. Raw-Edges Design Studio made a table of dry wheat set in wooden frames, and plates were planted within the stalks of wheat. The theme continued throughout the space, thanks to Rowan Mersh’s hanging installation composed of wheat, barley and oats strung onto mono-filament wire.

Corn Craft: Wooden Utensils by Nic Webb

Produced by Gallery FUMI and Studio Toogood, Corn Craft was a site-specific installation designed to highlight the properties of one simple, agrarian material: corn. By using traditional materials, methods and craftsmanship, sustainable design can created. Nic Webb’s hand-carved wooden utensils were the perfect tools for an earthy feast, complemented by mouth-blown glass with a tiny barley motif by Max Lamb and Gemma Holt. Nacho Carbonell used corn as the base material for furniture, and The Modern Pantry served up corn-based recipes served by waiters attired for the setting.

The Hatch: Studio TooGood & Arabeschi di Latte

The Hatch is an installation/pop-up eatery at the Dock designed by Studio TooGood and conceptual food designers Arabeschi di Latte. The décor pops: colourful giant building blocks covered in Formica are inspired by 20th-century art and architecture. Visitors sit on and among these sculptural elements and can also build with smaller scale blocks. The egg-themed food bar also has an element of interactivity, as diners choose from a selection of egg-based dishes and are given a “kit” with which to prepare it.
