Having grown up with a wood shop in the basement, it’s only natural that Chicago-based designer Jason Lewis would forge a career making furniture by hand. He says, “The activity of building things was always just part of the environment.” After college and a few years of the office grind, Lewis sought out a local woodworker who took on apprentices. Under his tutelage, Lewis learned traditional wood joinery and the craft of building fine furniture. In 2001, he went out on my own, building custom projects for local clients and working on a own line of his own designs. It’s been ten years.

You fold it up yourself and because it’s made from thick paper paired with a vinyl tube for water, you can use it like a real vase. Materials: ÄPPLARÖ Description: Materials: Ikea ÄPPLARÖ wall panel Description: I looked and looked for a simple headboard for my queen size metal bed frame (the typical kind with four casters and holes for attaching a headboard and footboard), but couldn’t find a suitable one anywhere. After finding the Ikea Hackers website, I decided that I’d be creative and “hack” myself a headboard. My requirements were these: – It had to be lightweight and easily moveable (I rent and I like to move my furniture around). – It had to be affordable (I set myself a budget of no more than 99 dollars). – It had to be around 62-63 inches wide (to properly fit the width of the queen bed frame).

ÄPPLARÖ headboard hack

A couple of months ago, I saw this DIY on Little Green Notebook using a gold leaf pen to spruce up some frames. Then a few weeks ago, while walking the aisles at Michael’s, I came across the three black frames above for only $3.99 each and I thought I’d try out the pen trick for myself, but in silver instead of gold. Our bedroom walls have been bare for almost a full year now, and I thought these frames would be perfect with some quick watercolors and a coat of silver leaf from the pen, which I also snagged at Michael’s.
Each frame took about 5-7 minutes, if that, and there was really no special technique to share – just shake the pen and paint it on! Sometimes, the paint would go on solid silver and then separate a bit if I went over it. I kept on with this, because I liked how the black of the frame came through a bit, as you can see in the close-up picture. Also, I removed everything from the frame beforehand, so I didn’t have to worry about getting anything on the glass.
Even though the silver leaf seemed to dry rather quickly, I let them sit out for a bit while I painted some quick watercolors and then let those sit for an hour or so before placing them in the frames.
Now I just have to get around to hanging those bad boys up!

Materials: BESTA, FRAMSTA, NUMERAR Description: I designed this desk to get all my computer equipment and cables up off the floor, behind cabinet doors, and leave my work surface completely clear. A major part of this project was also incorporating the analog meters which show my computer’s status. The desk is built mostly from modified IKEA parts (see the end for a complete parts list). There are wall-mounted cabinets in two depths. The lower center cabinets are cut to allow my monitors to be wall-mounted; the upper row holds my backup hard drives, video game consoles, speaker controller, UPS, printer, and other devices.
