Finnish wooden furniture and furnishings company Nikari began a year long project entitled 2012 Designs for Nature in which they asked 12 designers or studios to design a wood product that best represents Nikari’s philosophy on wood design. The decades old company designs top notch quality pieces from sustainable wood practices and each of the participants had to study their practices to create their own design. For the month of April , Swiss designer Alfredo Häberli created a family of three tables (in oak, ash, & birch) that feature large bases with thin, suspended tabletops. The delicate tops appear to float on the massive bases almost like rocks balancing on top of each other.

Japanese design collective Nendo , with design director Oki Sato at the helm, is launching its new collaborative brand K% with a collection entitled black&black . This is Sato’s first collection as the director of K%, a furniture brand from Singapore, but as the founder of Nendo, he has a keen eye and desire to make pieces accessible and affordable. The pieces in the line are all black and offer a stripped down approach to design where they avoid the “distraction of new materials, technique and color.” Collaborators on this collection include Studio JuJu and Exit Design . They each contributed one item. This particular collection will debut at Salone del Mobile 2012 in Milan and they anticipate collaborating with more designers in the future for new collections.

Materials: Two Aneboda chest of drawers, Ballard Designs Fretwork panels, cut- to-order mirrors Description: I love the look of mirrored fretwork furniture and had always wanted to attempt an Ikea hack. I needed a place to change my baby and store her clothes. When I came across the Aneboda drawers for about $59 each, I thought that they would work perfectly. At my local glass shop I had them cut mirrors to fit the drawer panels which originally came with just corrugated plastic panels. Next I used mirror adhesive that I bought at the hardware store and applied it generously to the back of the mirror.

Whisper is an acoustic panel that was created by Finnish designer Tapio Anttila for Woodnotes . Designed to eliminate sound problems for any space, these panels come in different sizes and colors. The panels are made from an acoustic cellulose fiberboard that is upholstered in a classic cotton fabric from Woodnotes. They are not only functional, they can be arranged a million different ways to create some really dynamic designs. Even if you don’t need them for sound enhancement, think of all the ways they could be used as a wall treatment

I could not have been more excited when I saw the LygoLamp from the Netherlands-based design firm Studio Mango . Inspired by LEGO bricks, they created a circular hanging lamp that arrives at your home in the form of 12 dozen curved, interlocking plastic bricks, as well as the necessary lighting hardware. After some childhood block building fun, you have yourself a super cool and modern fixture that will surely get people talking.
