For this week’s Friday Five we tapped New Zealand-based furniture and lighting designer David Trubridge . Trubridge is trained in Naval Architecture (or boat design), has worked as a forester, and taught himself how to create furniture. He presented his inspiration in terms of the five elements, along with gorgeous landscape photographs he took himself. Not coincidentally, this also happens to be the structure of the book he is writing about his life and design. 1. Earth: Wilderness The Earth is grounding.

A BOOV Although what is comfortable might differ from person to person, overall, we can all agree that comfort makes us feel at home, and at rest. A lamp made of spoons ? Sure, why not!? UK-based designer Clive Roddy designed this lamp with a lampshade made of spoons. Inspired by pinecones (clever!) when took a visit to Yosemite National Park, Roddy thought he’d try to translate it into a lamp with 115 stainless steel desert spoons. The tripod oak base acts as a pedestal for the sculpture that sits atop it

LeeLABS is behind a new line of concrete clocks, called Para Clocks , that were designed using parametric software to achieve the radial patterns they were inspired by. Despite being made of concrete, these clocks have a delicate look about them. They remind me of what you could draw with those Spirograph toys from childhood. Currently they have 6 patterns to choose from but hope to use Kickstarter to help them fund the building of an App that will allow customers to create their own designs

With a desire to join the two materials, Tel Aviv-based Dana Bachar created Felted , a collection of lamps made from felted wool and metal. A recent industrial design graduate of Holon Institute of Technology, she felted wool over the metal frames essentially joining them together. The soft, organic nature of the felt with the industrial metal creates an artistic and unique combination that’s also functional. Constanze Schweda’s new line of low tables are inspired by kirigami, which is a variation of origami that includes cutting the paper. Taking their cue from these three-dimensional shapes, the line of Curl tables also begins as a single sheet that in turn becomes a sculptural object. Each table is made from a thin sheet of steel that is cut and sculpted into the delicate-looking structures. They may look fragile but these tables are durable and perfect for indoor or outdoor use. Finished in a powder coating, they are available in three styles and come in white or custom colors.
