Modern furniture history

Beginning in the late 1900’s, furniture that has been inspired by modernism has been referred to as modern furniture. This new design of furniture has far surpassed pre-existing designs. Succeeding furniture with brilliant simplicity and glittering metals has surpassed the look of vibrant patterns, gilded and dark wooden structures. Styles which were loud have since been replaced with more uncomplicated designs.

Initially furniture was developed to act more like an ornament rather than a functional item. The great detail and lengthy creation of the piece would in turn reflect the value of the item as well as the demand. New ideals were implemented in the early 20th century where focus we repositioned on to functionality and access. Tradition and linage was the main feel of the design by most western designers. The modern movement brought the feel of new looks and feels based more with present and future times.

There were a number of influences’ with modern furniture design. More innovative and technical methods and materials where just a few of the ideas that came from the Werkbund and Bauhaus Schools, this was thought to be due to the influence of the exotic foreign nature perhaps from Art Nouveau, as well, obviously from the intense open mindedness and creativity of the designers themselves.

Earn/Urn by Neil Conley

Throughout his education, Neil Conley has been obsessed with the natural environment and this is reflected in his work both a designer and illustrator. Earn/Urn is the by-product of the Xendless project — Neil’s final year project on the 3D Design course at Northumbria University. The aim of the project was to develop a sustainable carbon-fiber composite, as well as a manufacturing process that made it suitable for the design of fine products. The almost indestructible nature of this material has led to huge amounts of waste around the world. But recent advances in carbon-fiber recycling now make it possible to unlock the fibers from these objects, leaving fibers “as pure as the virgin material,” prime for re-use

Friday Five with John Paul Philippe

John-Paul Philippe is a multi-talented painter and designer who divides his time between his Soho work studio, bucolic upstate home and roster of clients around the world. His distinctively modernist painting style put him on the map, and John-Paul now references this clean, graphic style in projects as diverse as furniture design, murals, large scale sculpture and even a private chapel in the Dominican Republic. John-Paul has also collaborated with Barneys New York on design components for a dozen stores, both in the US and Japan. John-Paul’s latest collaboration with west elm successfully meshes his original and whimsical look with the west elm aesthetic in the form of various chic and covetable new pieces including pillows, sculptures and framed drawings. Here’s some good stuff that’s been influencing John-Paul lately: 1.

Chick ‘n’ Egg

chick-egg

Lay back and count your chicks before they hatch on the awesome Chick ‘n’ Egg Chair. Made of corrugated cardboard, the Chick ‘n’ Egg Chair has an interesting look.

Available in both child’s size and adult size, the Chick ‘n’ Egg is first created as a 3D model. On the computer, the model is condensed to a flat surface and then printed onto eight cardboard sheets, for easy and protected shipping. Each piece is labeled on the cardboard and sent out with precise instructions. The user puts each piece of cardboard cutouts together by sliding them into each other; no glue or other fastener is needed.

The Chick ‘n’ Egg Chair is designed by Manuel Kretzner, an architect and designer in Germany. The Chick ‘n’ Egg is available for purchase through Kretzner’s company, Responsive Design Studio.
