Softwood by Veronika Wildgruber was exhibited at DMY International Design Festival Berlin and consists of a series of chairs carved from solid wood but made to appear like soft pillows. Upon first glance, they trick the viewer into thinking they are soft, comfortable chairs, but upon closer inspection you can see that they are actually hard wood. The idea behind this concept is that you cannot always rely on your perception. © 2010 Design Milk | Posted by Jaime in Home Furnishings | Permalink | 4 comments | Tweet This | Share on Facebook

These rain cloud lamps from DCS Corp consist of three parts of different materials. First, the shade is made of washi (Japanese paper) using a three-dimensional shaping method. The lower part is made of acrylic and is sustained by 36 pieces of metal rod. The silver rain cloud is made of transparent paper, but the golden rain cloud is created to form an image of rain cloud at dusk, although it is rare weather phenomenon.

Rooms , who we’ve blogged about in the past , sent me over two of their new projects: this table, which appears to be made from an old door, and a children’s storage and chair collection. Rooms is a partnership between the young Georgian designers Nata Janberidze and Keti Toloraia, who became friends while studying at the Tbilisi Academy of Art. Recently, they have acquired a new partner Baia Davitaia. They all believe that design needs to think globally while acting locally. Their intention is to create inventive, catchy, playful, ironic, distinctive designs mostly from the situation, product and consumer-oriented design process.

I’ve come to expect a lot from Kartell, and they never fail to impress me. Their latest collection, Bloom, is about as good at it gets and just in time for summer. A lavish cascade of crystalline flowers, these lights add a hint of mysticism to any space.

Bloom is available in several colors and styles ranging from totally transparent to opaque. Each is made of polycarbonate. A series of bulbs along the internal framework diffuses light off the petals for a captivating effect. Sure to be a focal point in any room!
