With a background in graphic design, Japanese designer Shinn Asano launched a six-piece collection of furniture called Sen , which is Japanese for ‘line’. Asano takes two-dimensional lines and works them into these three-dimensional, graphically inspired forms. Amihajime Table – Inspired by Japanese bamboo basket making and it fits a plant or vase in the center The red steel series was inspired by “Japanese shapes, traditional crafts, or feelings.” Taking notes from his graphic design past, careful attention is paid to the negative space just as much as the lines that make up each form. Kagome Stool – Made up of 18 right triangles that when viewed from above, a traditional Japanese craft (kagome moyou) appears I love the shadows created when light hits the pieces. Nobolu Hanger Stand – Inspired by the hieroglyphic characters of “kanji” where the three legs express grass (ground), the bulging center references the sun, and the upper part mimics a tree Kage Table – The bottom shelf reflects the shadow the top shelf would make Hitotaba Lamp – Inspired by a straw bundle Ippon Stool – A stool made from one continuous line Share This: Twitter | Facebook | Discover more great design by following Design Milk on Twitter and Facebook

Italian design studio Studio 06 has a new collection of projects designed for Youtool and produced by Curti Metallo that includes a fun hat-shaped table named El Sombrero. The three products in this collection are El Sombrero, a coffee table, pictured above also, and two stools named Saddle and ICS. El Sombrero is made of powder-coated steel and is available in three color finishes: all white, white with red central container, white with yellow goose beak center container. The table is assembled very easily only three moves and four screws. The Saddle Stool is made by folding a single sheet that mimics the saddle of cowboys, inviting you to ride it

Don’t you love when something appears so simple, but really it’s not that simple after all? That’s how this modern coffee table makes me feel. At first glance, it’s just a giant rock with some glass around it. But in reality, it’s a gorgeous modern coffee table that was crafted with time and perseverance to create a completely unique design.
Designed by Emmet Rock of Eagle Wolf Orca, the Archipelago II is what you see above. The grandiose size of the rock – and the fact that it “punctures” through the glass – rather than having the glass rest on top of a stone – is what gets my design-loving heart beating fast.
What I wouldn’t give for one of these bad boys in my living room! How do you feel about Archipelago?

Hailing from Wellington, New Zealand, industrial design student James Boock set out to design a table that was inspired by the way vines cling to a structure. The Clip table’s stainless steel legs represent the vines that are clipped onto the wood tabletop structure. Using ecologically treated Accoya pine and legs that attach and remove easily, the table can be flat-packed for easy shipping or just to put away. There’s an industrial simplicity about it that would make it fit in just about anywhere it was placed. The latest design to launch from Scandinavian design house Muuto is the Pull Lamp , designed by the Stockholm-based studio Whatswhat . Pull was the 2010 winner from Muuto’s annual competition where design students have historically had their winning designs produced by the company. The interactive lamp features a playful detail that allows the user to pull the shade to a lower position as needed. The cord is partially hidden which acts as the mechanism that allows the lamp to be adjusted.

For many, today is the first day back to a full week of work after two weeks of holidays. Factor in all of the holiday preparation before that and all of the undecorating after, and it becomes a case of the post-holiday blues.
Some people I’ve talked to are happy that the hustle and bustle of the holidays are over, which I am too in some ways, but then I look at my empty living room where my tree was just hours ago and it is a bit depressing.
I did a quick search of these post-holiday blues to see what people were saying about it, and I came across a list of ten ways to beat the holiday blues. Many of them include volunteering and doing other good deeds, but one of them hit home to what we’ve been talking about here: decluttering!
As for myself, I’ve been feeling a little bummed the past few days and I think the holidays having come and gone may have something to do with it. That, and the fact that my Christmas tree was infested with gross bugs. Guess I better act on all the decluttering I’ve been talking about!
What about you? Are you feeling the post-holiday blues?

Challenged by the local water company, Serra da Estrela , Portuguese design firm Colectivo da Rainha was to find a way to re-use the company’s PET plastic bottles as the central material in a new product. Accepting the challenge, the duo created the Plastic Bird House as a way to give a home to birds from something you already have in your home. The water company takes environmental issues seriously with their campaign to plant a tree for each bottle that’s sold and the designers, Filipa Ricardo and Renato Silva, took that to heart with their own belief that we all have “a home for nature in our home.” Each birdhouse is made from a single water bottle and the handle remains as a perch for the birds. After experimenting with the bottles and seeing that they could be re-molded and shaped with heat, the material became useful

Spanish designer Valvanera Arrieta participated in the European Design Labs Master 2012 with Jaime Hayon at the helm, and the Grid Set was her thesis project. Not only is the design dynamic, it’s functional because the set contains 11 pieces that any table could use including: salt shaker, pepper shaker, oil bottle, vinegar bottle, vase, napkin and cutlery containers, trays and pitchers. The geometric-shaped components are made from wood, porcelain, and glass and work together like pieces in a puzzle. The pieces nest together but also work in various configurations depending on what your table needs.
