The newest design from Strala is called Calmares, a light sculpture in two sizes that was designed to include several dozen energy-saving fluorescent tubes, each of which consumes just 24 watts of energy. “Calmares I” has 73 connected bulbs to form a spherical light and the smaller “Calmares II” has 13. The clustering and precise ordering allows the energy-saving bulbs to become graceful objects of beauty. The lamps resemble a freeze frame of an exploding firework or a starry sky, emitting soft, warm light

NLC is an LED pendant light designed for Germany company Next by Constantin Wortmann . At a first glance, NLC perplexes with its positively striking and yet strangely puzzling appearance. Friday Five with Joseph Joseph

All the rain on the East Coast the past few days is causing me to long for the days of summer so recently behind us. Coming across the X-Code from Yoann Designs didn’t make things any better!

But they are pretty cool. The X’s on the X-Code are bendable areas of the furniture that allow it to be folded in to a upright chair, a flat bench or a convenient table. With alternating slats, the X-Code folds into itself and locks sturdily into position. It also folds up easily for storage during these winter months.

Depending on your preference, the X-Code comes in a variety of colors, shown above. Which would you pick?

Artist and designer Reima Honkasalo created this sculptural light from recycled and disposed material called Light Mincer. The only part that is new is actually the light bulb. Reima explains that with this design he was asking “What is the lamp producing — except light?
